MONTEVALLO, Ala. - University of Montevallo junior Jacquelyn Thompson paced the Falcons with 16 points as a late comeback attempt came up short in a 74-53 loss to visiting USC Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference contest Jan. 19.
Thompson shot 5-of-16 from the floor, including 4-of-13 from beyond the arc, and grabbed four rebounds.
Junior Katherine Goldsby chipped in eight points and five rebounds for the Falcons, who fell to 1-15 overall and 0-9 in conference play. Freshmen Katija Tarailo and D'Miyah Foster finished with six points each.
Junior Tianna Hill grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while senior Carrington Caise dished out a team-best three assists.
The Pacers raced out to a double-digit lead early in the contest before Montevallo ended the half with a 11-5 run and trimmed the deficit to 34-26 at the break. Montevallo made 9-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch in the first half to cut into the USC Aiken lead.
USC Aiken again stretched its lead to double digits, with a pair of free throws by Emry Tsitouris giving the Pacers a 52-39 advantage with 10:03 left in the game.
However, the Falcons responded with a quick 7-0 run, with a layup by Goldsby trimming the deficit to 52-45 with 7:05 remaining in the game.
The Pacers pushed their lead back to 57-47 following a free throw by Kassy Johannsen with 4:40 remaining. The Falcons made one last run with Thompson knocking down a 3-pointer with 3:51 to trim the deficit to 59-51.
USC Aiken outscored the Falcons 15-2 down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Jan. 24 with a trip to Milledgeville, Ga. to take on Georgia College in a conference contest.
Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. Eastern/12:30 p.m. Central.
