ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Facing an elite opponent in the 13-2 Eckerd College Tritons, the University of Montevallo dropped a pair of games on the road.
The Falcons fell in the first game 8-0 after a complete game shutout from Eckerd's Amber Hay.
Montevallo got five hits off of Hay, including two knocks from freshman catcher Sydney Aguilar.
Celestia Davila, Lexes Wilson, and Jessica Mentzer also got hits for UM.
Jostlyn Higgerson (6-4) took the loss for the Falcons, but did strike out seven Tritons in her five innings.
In the second game, the Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead that featured a three-run first frame.
Kelsey Vining had a walk to open the game, followed by a Davila bunt single. Davila went on to steal second and eventually scored, along with Vining, after an Eckerd error.
Dylan Bailey singled up the middle later in the inning to score Aguilar.
Vining scored again in the second, giving Montevallo 4-0 lead.
The rest of the game would be controlled by the home team, as Eckerd went on to score seven unanswered runs and earn the 7-4 win.
Higgerson (6-5) came in in relief when the game was tied and was credited with the loss.
Davila went 2-for-4 in the second game and had a double.
Montevallo (9-9) is back home Wednesday, February 25, for a doubleheader against the University of West Florida.
