HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia College jumped out to a double-digit lead by halftime and held on down the stretch to defeat the Falcons 64-58 in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
A layup by junior Courtney McKenzie less than three minutes into the game gave Montevallo a 6-5 advantage, but it turned out to be the Falcons' final lead in the contest.
The Bobcats closed the first period with a 15-7 run, capped with a jumper by Christina Thomas, and took a 20-13 lead after the opening period.
A layup by Kadesha Gibbs gave Georgia College a 24-13 lead with 9:26 remaining in the first half, marking the Bobcats' first double-digit lead in the game. Georgia College led by as many as 14 points in the first half, the last time following a layup by Larice Walker with 53 seconds remaining in the half that gave the Bobcats a 31-17 lead.
Junior Tori Pharr knocked down 1-of-2 free throws late in the opening half to trim the Bobcats' lead to 31-18 heading into the locker room at halftime.
A layup by Walker with 8:05 remaining in the third period pushed the Bobcats' lead back to 14 points, giving Georgia College a 35-21 advantage.
The Falcons closed the third period with a 5-0 run, capped with a pair of free throws by senior Jacquelyn Thompson with 32 seconds left in the period, to trim the Bobcats' lead to single digits at 44-36 heading into the final period.
A layup by Gibbs gave Georgia College a 49-38 lead with 8:33 remaining in the game before the Falcons made one final push. Montevallo responded with a 14-3 run to trim the Bobcats' lead to 57-52 following a layup by McKenzie with 2:15 left in the contest.
However, a three-point play by Gibbs moments later gave Georgia College enough cushion down the stretch as the Bobcats secured the victory.
STAT OF THE GAME
Kadesha Gibbs of Georgia College made 8-of-9 free-throw attempts in the game, helping her teammates overcome a lackluster night at the charity stripe as the Bobcats shot just 60 percent (15-of-25) at the line.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS
Junior Morgan Smith grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds against the Bobcats.
Junior Courtney McKenzie, who finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor while leading the Falcons with 13 points, dished out a career-best three assists against Georgia College.
