Falcons drop series opener against Augusta 10-6

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior Daniel Pardo led off the game with a double to right field before scoring later in the frame on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field by senior Jeremy Hyde.

Augusta tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame when Nick Rau reached on a double to left-center field and scored on a RBI double to center field by Drew Taylor.

The Jaguars plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead over the Falcons. Jim Wagner, who reached on an error by the Falcons, scored on a fielder's choice hit by Cole Janousek. Janousek and Tyler Roberts, who was hit by a pitch, both came around to score on a two-run double to left-center field by Clint Hardy. Hardy scored on a RBI double to left field by Hunter Boose later in the inning.

The Falcons scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to trim the Jaguars' lead to 5-3. Junior Matthew Furuto, who reached on a walk, scored on a RBI triple down the right-field line by senior Michael Simmons. Simmons then came around to score on a RBI groundout by sophomore Chad Wagner.

Montevallo took a 6-5 lead over Augusta after plating three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Taylor Walker, who singled up the middle to lead off the frame, and Furuto, who reached on a single to left field, both came around to score on a RBI single by Jacob Whiting. Furuto scored on an error in left field by the Jaguars. Whiting scored later in the inning on a RBI single to left field by junior pinch hitter Alex Jones.

Augusta scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-6 lead. Wagner gave the Jaguars the lead on a two-run single up the middle before Cole Thompson capped the Jaguars' scoring in the game with a three-run homer to left-center field.

STAT OF THE GAME

The Jaguars left 10 runners on base and the Falcons stranded five runners on the basepaths.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Sophomore Drew Mullinax registered a season-high three strikeouts in a five-inning relief stint against the Jaguars. Mullinax, who took the loss on the mound, allowed four unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

UP NEXT

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Feb. 27 in the second game of the series against Augusta University at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, Georgia. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Eastern/1 p.m. Central.
