HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons wasted little time jumping out to an early lead over in-state opponent North Alabama.
Montevallo plated six runs in the opening inning to take an early 6-0 lead in the first frame of today's game. Wagner led off the bottom of the first with a walk and then was brought home to score by Matthew Furuto's RBI double into center field. Furuto scored on a Pardo single that got through the right side, and then Pardo was brought home on a RBI single from Caleb Ledbetter.Â
After a pitching change from the Lions with no outs, a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Sebastian Samuels to reach home to make it a 4-0 ball game. The scoring in the inning was capped off by Ryan Brooks when he singled up the middle for a pair of RBIs and scored Tyler Krabbe and Ledbetter to give Montevallo a 6-0 lead.
North Alabama scored a pair of runs, one in the third and another in the fourth, to make it a 6-2 ball game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Falcons responded with a pair of runs to push their lead back to six as they led the Lions 8-2.
The Lions cut the Montevallo lead back to four after scoring two more runs in the sixth inning.
The Falcons scored a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to push it to an 11-4 lead.
North Alabama scored one more run in the eighth inning as the Falcons held on for the 11-5 victory.
Justin Whitley got the start for the Falcons and threw a solid 3 1/3 innings, two of which were scoreless. Whitley allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out four batters.
Anthony Porter entered the game in relief and recorded the win in tonight's contest. Porter threw 1 2/3 innings and gave up just two hits.
Drew Mullinax, Nathan Mitchell, and Jake Posey all saw time on the mound for the Falcons and combined to retire five batters.
