HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons used late game dramatics for the second time in the series to pull an 8-7 upset of the 21st ranked Columbus State Cougars. Montevallo also clinched the series with today's victory.
Early on in the game, Columbus State jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on the Falcons. A three-run third inning got the nationally ranked Cougars rolling. Columbus State then plated two runs, one in the fourth and one in the fifth, to take what looked to be a commanding 5-0 lead.
Despite being down five runs, the Falcons began to battle back. Chad Wagner got the Falcons on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-RBI homerun to cut the Cougars' lead to 5-2.
Columbus State pushed their lead back to four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead.
The Falcons rallied back in the seventh inning to tie the game at 6-6. Daniel Pardo scored Mark Castellucci on a sacrifice fly to pull the Falcons to within three runs of the lead. The game-tying run came on the next at-bat when Sebastian Samuels homered to left field. Samuels' three-RBI homerun knotted the game at 6-6.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Cougars took a 7-6 lead on a RBI double.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Falcons were facing their final out after Wagner and Collin Dupree grounded out to begin the inning. Pardo reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman who was unable to corral a ground ball that snuck past him.
Samuels came up with his second clutch hit of the day with his second homerun of the game. The walk-off two-RBI homerun sealed the Falcons' 8-7 victory and clinched the series win.
Kale Latorre got the start for the Falcons and tossed six innings. Latorre gave up six runs on 10 hits in today's game.
Jake Posey entered the game in relief and threw 2 1/3 innings and allowed just one run on four hits.
Drew Mullinax and Tanner Koch each threw 1/3 of an inning with Koch (1-1) recording the win.
STAT OF THE GAME
