MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team is ready to kick off the 2018-19 season and is set to build on last season.
The Falcons were a young team a year ago but this past offseason Head Coach Gary Van Atta has brought in more young talent that will help the Falcons in the low post.
Montevallo returns six players from a season ago that will bring experience to the lineup for a rather young Falcon team. Of those six returning is junior guard Paige Ward. Ward played in 27 games a season ago and started in 23 of them. Also returning for their sophomore seasons is Nautika Philpot, Kiya Sain, Kourtnie Smith, Cheyenne Cunningham, and De'Asia Marsh. Coach Van Atta will look to each of his six returners to provide leadership on the court to his seven true freshmen.
Montevallo has a tough schedule ahead of them this season with only 11 home games out of the 29 on the schedule. After the Falcons' opening weekend bout with Tuskegee and Spring Hill in the GSC/SIAC Challenge, Montevallo will hit the road for a little over a month as they travel to Kansas, Miami, and Tampa. This road schedule will also include a trip to take on NCAA Division I opponent Jacksonville State.
Montevallo opens up their GSC portion of the schedule on November 29th when they take on Mississippi College. The Falcons next home game will be played a few weeks later when they host West Georgia on December 15th.
Montevallo is young but also experienced. Last year's trial by fire for a lot of the returners has built a solid foundation that Coach Van Atta believes can propel his team to the next level of play.
