Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Montevallo men's tennis team picked up its first ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent after defeating Delta State University 7-2 on the road March 25 in a Gulf South Conference match.
The Falcons improved to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in Gulf South Conference play following the win over the Statesmen, who entered the match ranked No. 35 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II national rankings.
"This was a huge win for our program," said Montevallo men's tennis coach Adam Albertsen. "Our men came out determined and fought for every point. Taking down a strong Delta State team is something we can build off of for upcoming Gulf South Conference matches."
Montevallo took five of six singles' matches and two of three doubles' matches against Delta State.
Sophomore Jan Fraederich defeated Emile Le Terrier of Delta State 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the No. 2 singles' match. Freshman Daniel Del Val topped Mason Vice of Delta State 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles' match.
Freshman Sergi Martinez took down Stedman Strickland of Delta State 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles' match. Freshman Tanguy David defeated Joao Yamacita of Delta State 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 5 singles' match.
Freshman Gavin Salton topped Andrew Hildenbrand of Delta State 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles' match.
Freshmen Petter Dahlin and James Bloomer defeated Vice and Yamacita 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles' match, while freshmen Brecht Van Buggenhout and Milan Ludlage edged Strickland and Timo Schmitz of Delta State 9-7 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, March 28 with a Gulf South Conference match on the road at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia.
