MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's tennis team fell to nationally-ranked Valdosta State University 5-0 in a Gulf South Conference match March 9.
The match against Valdosta State, which entered the match ranked No. 5 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II rankings, was called early after the first team to five matches due to darkness. The Falcons fell to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in Gulf South Conference play.
"Give Valdosta State a lot of credit for playing well and winning the big points," said Montevallo men's tennis coach Adam Albersten. "I really am proud of how our men fought in singles. This is a great learning experience for us as we continue to grow this season."
Sophomore Jan Fraederich was leading his No. 2 singles' match against Florian Simbozel 6-2, 3-3 before the match was suspended. Freshman Gavin Salton won the first set of his No. 6 singles' match against the Blazers' Axel Holm 6-2 and led 4-1 in the second set before the match was suspended.
In completed singles' matches, freshman Petter Dahlin fell to Jordi Mas of Valdosta State 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles' action and freshman Tanguy David fell to the Blazers' Davis Stewart 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles' match.
Freshmen Daniel Del Val and Sergi Martinez fell to Mas and Simbozel 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles' match. Freshman James Bloomer and Dahlin fell to Francisco Yim Kim and Fernando Rivas of Valdosta State 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles' match.
Freshmen Brecht Van Buggenhout and Milan Ludlage fell to Stewart and Holm 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles' match.
The Falcons will return to action on the road at Tuskegee University in a non-conference match Wednesday, March 14.
