DAY 1 - RESULTS (PDF) | DAY 1 RECAP
SEWANEE, Tenn. - Four individual wins and a second-place men's finish highlighted the University of Montevallo's debut to collegiate swimming at the 19th annual Sewanee Invitational.
Montevallo's men's team claimed second place, while the women also posted the second-best performance in the pool but finished third behind Sewanee, which collected points in diving. Several UM swimmers recorded lifetime personal best times in their events, while
Connor Daigle and
Molly Hansen etched their names in Montevallo athletics history with the school's first-ever wins, both winning two events.
"I'm really proud of the team. We swam really well and fought hard. We got out touched a couple of times, but we also did the out-touching," said UM head coach
Aaron Mahaney. "I was really impressed with the performance of the team. I was thinking we might have freshmen jitters being the first meet and not having any upperclassmen, but they stepped up overall and had some good races. There's still a lot of learning we have to do and a lot of growing, but for the first meet ever, I was pleasantly surprised."
RECORD-SETTERS
- Each team set 14 school records during the day and 19 total in Montevallo's first-ever competitive meet.
- Connor Daigle is the first UM men's swimmer to win a race in program history, winning both the 400-yard IM (4:19.14) and 200-yard IM (2:02.39).
- Molly Hansen is the first UM women's swimmer to win a race in program history, winning both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.46) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.24). She set three UM records Saturday and five total in the meet.
- Emmanual College broke 10 Sewanee Invitational records in the event's 19th year.
COUNTING POINTS
- Montevallo's men's team brought home the second-place trophy with 642 team points behind Emmanual College (1,174). Sewanee was third with 587.5 points, followed by South Georgia State College (392.5) and LaGrange College (191).
- UM's women scored 718 points, 32 points behind second-place Sewanee (750). Sewanee scored 177 of its points in diving events as the only team in the meet with divers.
- Twelve men scored points for UM on its first of competition. Josha Sauer set five program records and led the men's team with 65 points. Kyle Smithers scored 64 team points.
- Molly Hansen scored a team-high 88 points for the women's team. Amanda Ware and Amanda Farmer followed with 53 and 52 points, respectively. Fifteen UM women's swimmers scored team points.
