Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. — If there was a moment that symbolized Montevallo's 69-50 loss to Auburn University Montgomery Saturday afternoon, it came with 3:07 remaining in the fourth quarter as
Nautika Philpot's attempted layup rolled from the left side of the iron, to the right then into the outreached arms of a waiting player underneath the basket.
On the afternoon, Montevallo (9-2, 4-1) shot 28.4 percent from the field (19-67), including 6 of 26 from behind the 3-point arc. The Falcons knocked down six of 11 free throw attempts, too. While on the other end, the Warhawks made 50 percent of their shots (28-56), including 7 of 15 from 3-point land and six of eight free throw opportunities.
"Well, the best team won (today)," said Montevallo head coach Gary van Atta. "The Gulf South Conference is a tough league. We've been where they were last year trying to win our first conference game of the year. It's just a big rivalry and hats off to (AUM head coach) Sean (Page), because they did a good job today."
It was all AUM (7-6, 1-5) from the jump as Jemaiya Lee pushed the Warhawks ahead, 2-0, with a jumper 33 seconds into the game. From there, AUM led for the next 39:08 as the Falcons were never able to get closer than one – 7-6 – which came at the 7:40 mark of the first quarter.
"AUM just shot the ball well and played well all-around," van Atta said. "Our kids probably played the worst game they have all season, but that's how it works in this league.
"We started today a game out of first place, and we lost today and now we are tied for first. It's a crazy game, but we just have to put it behind us and move on to West Florida on Monday."
Catlin Carter, who entered the game as AUM's third-leading scorer, poured in a game-high 26 points, while Victoria Morales added 18 points and 14 rebounds. Jordan Brewster, who entered the game with a 11.5 scoring average, was held to only six points with her lone field goal coming with 45 seconds left in the game.
For the first time all season,
Shyan Flack was held in single digits as the sophomore forward was limited to only eight points on 3-of-11 shooting in just under 32 minutes of game action.
Aaliyah Rice, who flanked Flack underneath the basket, scored only four points on 2-of-9 shooting. Philpot led the Falcons with nine points, while
Marisa Snodgrass added eight in 30 minutes of game time.
Montevallo will return to action when the Falcons host the University of West Florida on Monday, Jan. 6 with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
