Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of Montevallo women's basketball team shook off a back-and-forth first half with the University of West Florida to outscore the Argonauts during the third quarter en route to a 65-54 win for the Falcons.
"We just relaxed, honestly," said Montevallo head coach Gary van Atta. "We really didn't change anything; we had a couple isolations that we started to take advantage of. We really just gave ourselves an opportunity to put the ball in the basket."
Putting the ball through the net is exactly what Montevallo (10-2, 5-1) did after being down 28-26 at halftime. The Falcons came out of the locker rooms and made nine field goals — two shy of their entire first-half total — throughout the game's next 10-minute period. During the same stretch, UM sank all six free throw attempts and mixed in two 3-pointers to outscore the Argonauts, 26-11, during the third quarter and take control of the game.
"We really just wanted to keep (West Florida) off balance a little bit during the third quarter," van Atta said. "The defense that we played really gave us a chance throughout that quarter."
Shyan Flack, who was held to single digits for the first time all season during UM's loss on Saturday, responded with a team-high 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including three free throws. The sophomore from Somerville, Ala., also had a game-high five blocks to go along with six rebounds, four assists and one steals.
Aaliyah Rice joined Flack in double figures as the senior poured in 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting, while bringing down eight rebounds in 27 minutes of game action.
Marisa Snodgrass, the Falcons' 5-foot-4 freshman from Hazel Green, added nine points on three 3-point baskets to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
For West Florida (4-10, 0-6), Danielle Norquest scored a game-high 21 points and brought down a game-high 17 rebounds in a team-high 36 minutes of game action.
"The game of basketball is just that … basketball," van Atta said. "We have a short turnaround with a game on Wednesday, but the girls would rather play in games than practice any day.
"Every game is important to us if we want to have aspirations of playing in the postseason."
Montevallo will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when the Falcons host Lane College at 5:30 p.m.
