MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Saturday's Purple vs. Gold Meet from the Robert M. McChesney Student Activity Center Natatorium was only a tune-up before the real season begins on Oct. 31. But you wouldn't have known that by looking at the athletes, who were filled with joy and excitement cheering on their teammates for every event. The Gold team prevailed over the Purple team by a final score of 183-180, winning 12 out of 20 possible events, in the programs first racing opportunity since the NSISC championships.
Head coach
Aaron Mahaney opened up about the excitement of kicking off the new season, "It's amazing to be back in action, to be able to see everyone get up have fun and race it was really great."
The Falcons notched excellent performances from its returners and also got a glimpse of the impact of its newcomers.
Sophomore
Amanda Ware claimed a series of individual event victories in the 100 free, 500 free, and 200 back.
Thom Naccarato won the 50 free with a time of 22.80 which is only 1.44 ticks away from his UM record in the event. The Gold team captain claimed his second individual victory of the day in the 200 back.
Newcomers
Ergi Veli and
Jacob Rubin proved themselves in their debut as Falcons. Veli claimed an individual win in the 200 breast for the Gold team while sophomore transfer
Jacob Rubin saw a pair of individual wins in the 100 yard free and the 200 yard free.
"We have a lot to build on, got to just get in the water and get back in the groove of things. I am excited about where we are and we are ready to kick the season off and get going" remarked Mahaney.
NEXT UP: The Falcons will be in the pool again Saturday October 31, against the University of the South for a virtual swim meet.
