Falcons looking forward to a strong comeback

MONTEVALLO, Ala - The 2020 golf season was one full of excellent performances with plenty of momentum going into the future tournaments on the schedule.  That was until the University of Montevallo announced that the remaining spring competition would be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Montevallo women's golf team had just completed their sixth tournament of the year and were looking forward to a challenge at West Georgia before the untimely ending of the season.

The Falcons had risen to No. 24 in the national polls and No.14 in the regional polls in the fall after finishing in the top five of three out of the four tournaments played during the time period.  With finishes of 1st, 4th, 2nd, 5th, on the record book the team was in full swing go forward into the rest of the schedule.
"I was really excited to get to conference this year and felt that if we played well we could win. We were having a strong season and even were in the top 25 for a good portion of the year", said head coach Justin Pratt.

Redshirt senior Alexis Berger won an individual title at the Full Moon Invitational after she shot two under par 69 on day two making a five stroke comeback.  Her performance bolstered her to be the Gulf South Conference Player of the Month during the month of September.

The team tied for sixth place at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational after a solid effort from Kayla Shelton.  Shelton, who is headed into her senior year, notched a score of 75 for round one and shot an even-par 72 to move up ten spots in the final standings

The Falcons saw a fourth place finish at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial after posting a team score of 600 for a two round total of 24 over par.  The team was led by the rising sophomore Bernardita Villalba who shot one over par 145 through the two round event.

The UM golf team finished second at the Jekyll-O-Lantern Intercollegiate after putting up a team score of 605 making the two round total of 29 over par.

At the Low Country Invite in South Carolina the squad ended the tournament standing in the fifth place spot after a seven birdie performance from Kayla Shelton who led the Falcons in scoring that day.

The news surrounding the COVID-19 was unfortunate for everyone effected but the team is looking to work hard and come back stronger in the fall.  Coach Pratt spoke about moving forward through these circumstances, "Heading into the fall I am looking forward to see how this team comes back. I know we have several girls working really hard right now and with such a large core group returning it will be very competitive to earn playing time. I hope they are as excited as me to get going again and ready to set some new goals and build off some of the success they showed this past year."
