MONTEVALLO - Falcon Head Women's Basketball Coach Gary Van Atta announced the signing of international standout Savannah Cook. Cook is a hybrid guard/forward from New Zealand. She is the first international player ever signed by Van Atta.
"We are extremely excited to bring Savannah to the United States and play for the University of Montevallo," said he said.. "She brings a wealth of experience from high school to regional and national competition. She has competed and succeeded at the highest level."
"Savannah is a competitor and a hard worker on and off the court,," added Van Atta. "We think she's a special kind of talent, who can shoot it from anywhere."
Van Atta feels that Cook will be an asset to the team on the perimeter. "Savannah has a tremendous upside as she transitions from international competition. With the movement of the 3-point line back to the FIBA 3-point line, she has an advantage of having shot from that distance since she began playing the game."
Among her accomplishments, Savannah was a selection for the ETCO Auckland Dream WNBL last season. She was MVP at One Tree Hill College Senior A Basketball Girls Team and competed at the New Zealand Trials for Junior Tall Ferns in 2021. In addition, she was a selection for the Auckland Premier Basketball U17 Girls Team in 2021, placing 3rd at nationals and 1st Place Māori National Team for Polynesian Basketball.
Savannah's Coach at One Tree, Chris Vaughan said that Savannah is looking forward to studying and playing basketball at the University of Montevallo. "She is a fantastic shooter and averaged 43.5 points per game this [past] season, carrying her high school team on her back," he commented. "She is a fantastic kid from a great family, and has a killer instinct on the court."
Vaughn went on to say that Savannah is a great leader on and off the court and has a high basketball IQ too. She is also a fantastic student with a 3.6 GPA."
