GSC Preseason MBB Awards Announced, UM Lands Two on Newcomer Watchlist

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – As basketball season approaches, the Gulf South Conference has announced its preseason awards which features University of Montevallo basketball student-athletes Kendon Knight and Jaylon Tharpe on the Newcomer's Watchlist, Wednesday.

In June, Anthony Komara was announced as the next Montevallo Men's Basketball Head Coach. Since assuming the roll, Komara has built a roster of 16 that includes nine newcomers. Among the newcomers is junior guard Kendon Knight and graduate guard Jaylon Tharpe who were both named to the GSC Newcomer's Watchlist.

Prior to joining the Falcons, Knight spent three seasons at Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas. During his time with the Scotties, the Montgomery, Ala. native played in 74 games and averaged 4.9 points per game. He was a 42.1 percent career field-goal shooter and 31 percent career three-point shooter.

Tharpe comes to Montevallo following a four-year career at Trevecca Nazarene University. While with the Trojans, Tharpe played in 94 games and averaged 5.7 points per game. He registered over 100 made three-pointers in his career while shooting 32.4 percent from downtown.

Montevallo was picked to finish 11th in the GSC this season in the preseason coaches' poll, garnering 43 total points. The Falcons finished 11-9 in the league last season in seventh place.

The 2022-23 season will begin with a pair of exhibitions. On Nov. 2, the Falcons will travel to Western Kentucky before facing Troy on Nov. 7.
