No. 6 Montevallo Blasts Six Homers en route to Doubleheader Sweep of AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 6 baseball team in the nation, the University of Montevallo, swept a doubleheader on the road in Montgomery, Alabama, against AUM in Gulf South Conference play, Saturday.
 
The Falcons scored a combined 25 runs on the day and complied a total of 27 hits, outscoring the Warhawks by a grand total of 25 to 9 on the day.
 
With the pair of wins, the Falcons improve to 20-4 on the year and 9-2 in conference play as the squad currently sits in first place.
 
On the day, the Montevallo sluggers combined for six homers – including a combined five from the bats of Sam Kuchinksi and Ben Teel. The Homewood, Alabama native, Teel, led UM with three home runs on the day as he hit one in the first and two in the second game.
 
Montevallo's starters on the mound, Logan Samuels and JJ Pease, each earned wins on the mound and are now a combined 8-0 on the year.
 
GAME ONE

 Ben Teel opened the first game of the doubleheader with his eighth homer of the year, a bomb to left field, to put the Falcons on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Warhawks answered Teel's homer in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot, tying the game 1-1.
 
Following a scoreless second inning, Teel added his second RBI of the contest when he drove in Evan Liddie on a ground out to third. Next up, Sam Kuchinski delivered his first RBI of the contest when he doubled down the left field line to put the Falcons ahead 3-1.
 
In the top of the fourth, the Falcons broke the game open with a five-spot. It began when Liddie doubled to drive in two runs. Alex Langford singled to center field to plate UM's fifth run of the afternoon to lead AUM 6-1. Next up, Kuchinski added his fourth RBI of the day when he blasted a three-run homer deep to centerfield as the Falcons took an 9-1 advantage.
 
A pair of runs in the fifth from AUM made it a 9-3 game before a pinch-hit RBI single off the bat of Brandon Moore answered the Warhawks and pushed UM's lead to 10-3.
 
In the top of the seventh, UM continued adding runs and scored three in the frame. Asa Awbrey opened the inning with an RBI double to right field to score Teel. Montevallo scored its 11th run of the game when Kuchinksi scored on an AUM fielding error. The lead was pushed to nine, 13-3, when Christian Kallaher doubled to score Awbrey.
 
Kuchinski delivered his second homer of the game in the top of the eighth to push his RBI total to six for the day and push UM's lead to 11, 15-4.

GAME NOTES
  • Sam Kuchinski led Montevallo in game one with a monster day from the plate. He finished 3-for-4 from the plate with six RBI, three runs scored, a walk and two homers.
  • Ben Teel added a homer for the Falcons as he finished 1-for-4 from the plate with a pair of RBI.
  • Montevallo combined for 15 runs on 18 hits in an eight-inning affair.
  • Along with Kuchinski, Liddie tied for the team lead in hits and he went 3-of-5 from the plate.
  • Logan Samuels improved to 4-0 on the year in the win as he pitched 5 and two thirds innings, allowed three runs and struck out two.
GAME TWO
 
Montevallo fell behind to AUM early in the second game when scored one on an RBI single.  In the following frame, Asa Awbrey quickly answered for the Falcons with a solo homer. Montevallo took the lead, 2-1, on a RBI single through the left side from Alex Langford that scored Barry Eiseman.
A second consecutive scoreless inning on the mound for Montevallo's game-two starter, JJ Pease, kept UM in front, 2-1, to begin the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, Eiseman scored his second run of the day on a double play ball off the bat of Jake Smallwood.
The host side picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth to once again make it a one-run game, 3-2. Similar to the first game of the day, Montevallo's bats finally broke loose in the fifth. The run inning began when Ben Teel hit his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left center, to push UM ahead 5-2. A throwing error scored two Falcons to increase the lead to five, 7-2, before the eighth run was added on a wild pitch.
 
After AUM picked up a pair of runs in the fifth, Teel knocked his third homer of the day and second of game two, a two-run bomb, to push Montevallo's lead to six, 10-4.
 
Zach Toth finished off the win in relief and struck out two batters in the final inning.

  • JJ Pease earned the win and improved to 4-0 on the season.
  • Zach Toth pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief and struck out three.
  • Montevallo scored ten runs on nine hits in game two.
