MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No.4/5 University of Montevallo baseball team split a twin bill to West Alabama, Saturday.
The Falcon bats shined in game one as UM defeated the Tigers 10-6 before falling in game two, 8-4, to snap a seven-game win streak.
Montevallo wins the series 2-1 over UWA and moves to 25-4 on the year and 12-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
GAME ONE
The scoring began early in game one of the doubleheader as both teams combined for five runs in the first inning. West Alabama plated a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-RBI double. In the bottom of the frame, Montevallo answered the Tigers with three runs of their own. It began with an RBI groundout from Sam Kuchinksi. Next, a
Reed Latimer single drove in
Ben Teel before a sacrifice fly from
Asa Awbrey scored Latimer to give Montevallo a 3-2 lead.
UWA quickly evened the score 3-3 in the top of the second with a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Kuchinksi logged his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the frame on a single to center to give UM the lead back, 4-3. Before the inning ended, Latimer added another RBI with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to two, 5-3.
JJ Pease earned the start on the mound, settled into the game in the third, and went three up three down before keeping the Tigers at bay in the fourth.
The two-run lead disappeared in the fifth when UWA hit a two-run home run to even the score. The Montevallo bats answered the in-state rival in the bottom of the frame with a three-spot.
Luke Mitchell drew a walk, setting up an RBI double down the left field line for
Jake Smallwood to put UM on top, 6-5. In the ensuing at-bat,
Zen Hiatt delivered a pinch-hit homer – a bomb over the scoreboard in right field - his third of the year to make it an 8-5 game.
An RBI single for the Tigers in the eighth shortened Montevallo's lead to two in the eighth. Latimer delivered an answer for Montevallo in the bottom of the inning as he knocked in his third and fourth runs of the day on a two-RBI single, pushing the lead to 10-6.
Connor Phelan closed out the win on the mound in the ninth as he kept the Tigers off the board and earned his third save of the year.
