Falcons Rout West Georgia, 22-6, Win Series 2-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –  In an offensive explosion Sunday afternoon, the University of Montevallo baseball team won the rubber match against West Georgia, 22-6, to win the series 2-1.
 
The Falcons scored a season-high 22 runs on 19 hits and held UWG to just six runs for the largest margin of victory this season.
 
The onslaught began early for the Falcons with seven runs in the first inning. Connor Crowson led off the inning with his first of two hits in the frame on the first pitch he saw. After Evan Liddie reached with a base hit, Ethan Huddleston drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single to right field. Liddie made it 2-0 when he scored on a wild pitch.
 
With runners on the corners and no outs in the opening frame, Jake O'Connell, who had a big day at the plate Saturday, knocked a two-RBI double to left-center to make it 4-0.
 
After Landon Leake reached on an error, left fielder Brandon Moore hit his first of two doubles and drove in another run to give UM a 5-0 lead.
 
With two outs, Crowson singled for the second time in the inning, driving in two more runs to make it 7-0.
 
After going three-up, three-down in the first, and the seven-spot at the plate, Gino Cozzi returned for the second inning. Cozzi added two more K's but gave up a trio of runs as West Georgia cut the lead to 7-3.
 
The Falcons grabbed a run back in the bottom of the second when Landon Leake singled up the middle to score O'Connell, to lead 8-3.
 
In the bottom of the third, after Cozzi held UWG off the board and added his fifth strikeout, Logan Harbin collected an RBI single to push the lead to six, 9-3.
 
Cozzi made quick work of the Wolves in the fourth, going three-up, three-down for the second time. In the bottom of the frame, Moore collected his second double of the day and scored on an RBI single by Christian Kallaher. Leake added a run on a passed ball after recording his second hit as UM's lead moved to 11-3.
 
Following another solid inning of work from Cozzi, center fielder Daniel Irizarry singled and drove in a run to make it 12-3. With two outs, Lidde singled through the right side and drove in two runs to lead 14-3.
 
West Georgia added a pair of solo homers in the top of the sixth, but Trey Felker closed the frame with a K in his relief appearance.
 
The Falcons offense remained relentless in the bottom of the sixth and scored a game-high eight runs on four hits. Along with four hits, there were three walks and three hit-by-pitches in the inning. Kallaher collected an RBI with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and Irizarry drew a bases-loaded walk for UM to lead 16-5. A wild pitch scored pinch runner Jimmy Manzella before Aiden Cloud picked up a two-RBI single, his first of the year, to make it 19-5.
 
In a pinch-hit at-bat in the sixth, Khalil Bell kept the offense rolling with a two-RBI double to right center. To cap off the frame, Jimmy Manzella singled for the first hit of his career and drove in his first run to put UM ahead 22-5.
 
Logan Wilsker relieved Felker in the seventh and closed it out with his first strikeout of the season.
 
The 22-6 rout of the Wolves was a true team effort with 12 different players recording a hit, and 13 out of 14 reaching base safely. All nine of UM's starters reached base, recorded a hit and drove in a run.

  • Connor Crowson, Evan Liddie and Jake O'Connell each reached base a team-high four times in the win.
  • Crowson and Lidde each went 2-for-3, with two RBI. Crowson walked twice and Lidde was hit-by-pitch twice.
  • O'Connell walked a team-high three times and scored a team-high four runs.
  • All nine starters recorded a hit, drove in a run and scored a run.
  • Crowson, Liddie, Logan Harbin, Landon Leake, and Brandon Moore each picked up multiple hits in the win.
  • Brandon Moore had two extra-base hits as he went 2-for-4, with two doubles, scored two runs, walked and had an RBI.
  • Montevallo scored a season-high 22 runs on 17 hits. UM's 22 runs is the most since a 22-6 win over Shorter in 2022.
  • Montevallo walked a season-high 11 times and had six HBP. UM's HBP mark is tied for the third most in a single game. The most recent six HBP game was in 2019 against Columbus State.
  • Gino Cozzi improved to 5-1 on the year and added 5 K's on the mound.
