Falcons Leave The Palmetto State with Their First Win of 2024

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team picks up their first win of the 2024 season in an exciting, five-set match. The Falcons dropped the first match of the day, 2-3, against Carson-Newman University, but bounced back and won a five-set thriller against Francis Marion, 3-2.
 
In the early window, Montevallo lost to Carson-Newman in five sets. In the match, Brooklyn Hudson led the Falcons with 13 kills on a .250 hitting percentage. Blakeley Robbins notched a career-high of 19 assists in her young career while fellow freshman Ava Wind had 17 digs.
 
In the second match, Montevallo earned their first win of the season against Francis Marion. Freshman Nikol Antova had a career-high 21 kills in the match which is the second most kills in a match by anyone in the Gulf South Conference. Antova is currently second in the GSC with 75 kills. Colton Thompson assisted of 21 kills while Blakeley Robbins had 15 assists of her own. Ava Wind led the Falcons in digs with 18 and added seven assists and four service aces. Eliza Tyrrell had the third most aces in a match out of any GSC player this season with six.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1
  • The Eagles jumped out to a 7-3 advantage with the help of four Falcon miscues.
  • Montevallo closed the gap with a 3-0 run with a kill by Danielle Green and an ace from Colton Thompson.
  • The Falcons took a 14-12 lead with an ace from Eliza Tyrrell and a kill from Claire Hayes.
  • After CNU shortened the gap to 19-18, UM closed out the Eagles and won the first set with six straight points. Eliza Tyrrell got the run started with two kills assisted by Thompson, then after an ace from Grace Petro, UM took advantage of three Carson-Newman attack errors.
 
Set 2
  • Down 6-12, Montevallo crept back into the set with kills by Aliyah Thompson and Brooklyn Hudson. Kalin Duncan served up an ace to force a Carson-Newman timeout.
  • Following the timeout, the Eagles stepped on the gas and never looked back as they only allowed the Falcons five more points as CNU won 25-14.
Set 3
  • Blakeley Robbins started the third set with an ace and set up Brooklyn Hudson for a kill. Hudson teamed up with Claire Hayes for a block to put the Falcons up 3-1 early.
  • Robbins would earn the assist on two more kills by Hayes and Hudson to keep the advantage on the Falcon sideline.
  • Carson-Newman would win the next eight consecutive points to take a 13-5 lead.
  • After a dump off by Ava Wind that surprised the Eagle defense, CNU would rip off a 10-1 run to extend their lead to 23-7.
  • Montevallo fought back with bells from Katie Wilkerson and Claire Hayes but it was too little, too late as the Eagles would hold the Falcons off to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Set 4
  • The young Falcon squad showed grit and poise as they started the fourth set hot with six kills to take a 7-1 lead.
  • CNU clawed their way back in it until Aliyah Thompson stopped their run. Claire Hayes then teamed up with Blakeley Robbins for two kills to extend the Falcon lead to 14-10.
  • Montevallo took advantage of Eagle errors to go up 21-14.
  • Down 23-15, Carson-Newman went on a 9-1 run to tie the Falcons in the set 24-24.
  • UM took the advantage with a kill from Brooklyn Hudson. After the Eagles tied it up, Blakeley Robbins set Claire Hayes to take another one-point lead over CNU.
  • Carson-Newman earned a bid at match point but two Falcon points gave UM the advantage.
  • The Eagles took another one-point lead with two straight kills for the 29-28 advantage.
  • Montevallo kept their fight on as they won the next three points with kills from Nikol Antova and Aliyah Thompson, both assisted by Kalin Duncan, and a attack error on CNU.
 
Set 5
  • Carson-Newman put the Falcons in a hole early by taking seven out of 10 points to start the final set.
  • Two kills by Nikol Antova brought UM within two.
  • CNU won the next four out of five points with two kills, an ace and a Montevallo error.
  • The Eagles closed out UM with three kills from three different players.

Set 1
  • The Francis Marion Patriots came out hot as they finished the first set with a .522 hitting percentage. They converted 14 kills and only two attack errors.
  • With the Falcons closing in, FMU went on a 12-3 run to earn a 1-0 advantage in the match.
 
Set 2
  • The second set was all Montevallo as they staked themselves to a 15-1 lead early. In the run, UM had four aces and six kills.
  • Nikol Antova had seven kills for the Falcons.
  • Eliza Tyrrell had four aces in this set.
  • Montevallo posted a hit percentage of .391.
 
Set 3
  • The Falcons started off the set on a 4-1 run with kills from Hayes and Hudson. Tyrrell contributed her fifth ace of the match.
  • Francis Marion took a 5-4 lead off a kill and three errors on UM.
  • Tied 6-6, Antova picked up two more kills from Robbins and Thompson.
  • The Patriots went on their second 4-0 run of the set with a kill and three miscues on Montevallo.
  • After Eliza Tyrrell tied the set up at 11-11, FMU took a 5-0 run.
  • UM got back into the set with kills from Antova and Hudson, but FMU ended the threat with a 7-2 run.
  • In the set, Francis Marion out-hit the Falcons .313 to .027.
 
Set 4
  • Like the first match, Montevallo showed poise for a young roster as they dominated the fourth set.
  • A 5-0 run led by two kills from Antova and a kill and an ace from Tyrrell, gave the Falcons the advantage in the must-have set.
  • Up 11-6, UM ripped off a 7-0 run.
  • Montevallo forced the Patriots into two errors and a big block from Danielle Greene to tie the match up at 2-2.
  • The Falcons had 12 kills and only three errors in the set. FMU hit -0.08 with only five kills.
 
Set 5
  • Tied 2-2, junior Danielle Greene put the Falcons on top with two kills assisted by Robbins and Thompson.
  • After a Patriot point, UM took the next three points with a kill from Aliyah Thompson, an ace by Antova and an FMU error.
  • Up 8-5, UM earned the next point with a block from Claire Hayes and Aliyah Thompson. Kills from Hayes and Hudson gave the Falcons more breathing room at 11-5.
  • Down 12-6, FMU would make a comeback attempt at the Falcons by winning the next three points.
  • A service error killed the Patriots rally attempt, then a kill by Antova and a block by Antova and Danielle Greene would give the Falcons their first win of 2024.
 
UP NEXT
Montevallo will return home where they will play in front of the home faithful when they host the 2024 GSC/PBC Crossover. The Falcons will play three home matches against Lander at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, No. 25 Augusta at 6:00 pm. on Sept. 20 and will end the crossover against USC Aiken on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 pm.
