MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team wins both ends of their double-header in the GSC/PBC Crossover including a victory over Lander and No. 22 Augusta.
In the first match of the day and the first home match of the regular season, Montevallo downed the Bearcats in a five-set thriller. In the nightcap, the Falcons knocked off the No. 22 ranked Augusta Jaguars, 3-1. This would be the Falcons first ranked win since 2003.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
- With the score tied 4-4, Lander gained the first big momentum swing of the match when they went on a 6-1 run with two kills and errors on the Falcons.
- Down 16-8, Montevallo climb back into the set by taking six of the next seven points including three consecutive kills by Nikol Antova.
- After a kill by the Bearcats, Montevallo went on a 5-0 run to take the lead highlighted with kills by Brooklyn Hudson and Danielle Greene with an ace from Blakeley Robbins.
- Tied 22-22, UM took the next three out of four points to close the set with kills from Eliza Tyrrell, Nikol Antova and Brooklyn Hudson.
Set 2
- Montevallo opened up the second set with four consecutive points with kills by Hudson, Hayes and Antova. Colton Thompson assisted twice in the run.
- The Bearcats would scratch their way back into it with three kills and an ace to shorten the UM advantage to 6-4.
- The Falcons then took advantage of three errors by the Bearcats and added two points on aces by Colton Thompson and a kill by Aliyah Thompson.
- Up 13-9, Montevallo won six consecutive points, three of which were kills assisted by Colton Thompson.
- The Bearcats mounted a comeback and scored eight points out of 11 chances to pinch the Falcon lead to 24-18.
- A Brooklyn Hudson kill ended the set to put the Falcons up 2-0 in the match.
- Colton Thompson had eight assists in the set.
Set 3
- Lander came out hot in the do-or-die set for the Bearcats and terminated three kills out of four points to take the lead.
- LU won the next four out of five points with three kills and a Falcon error.
- After a kill by Aliyah Thompson, Lander went on a 6-3 run to create distance with a 15-9 lead.
- Montevallo got some momentum for a short 3-0 run with a kill from Antova, an ace from Robbins and a Bearcat miscue.
- The Bearcats responded with a 3-0 run of their own.
- Lander won the final seven out of 10 points to take the third set.
- LU recorded a .519 hitting percentage in set three.
Set 4
- Both teams battled back and fourth and the Falcons brought the score to a tight 13-12 set.
- Lander ripped off an 10-2 run to stake themselves to a 23-14 advantage.
- After a service error on the Bearcats, Lander tied the match up at 2-2 with an error committed by the Falcons and a kill.
Set 5
- Falcons jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead.
- After Lander tied it up at 3-3, Montevallo took a 7-0 run with three kills by Nikol Antova and one from Danielle Greene.
- The Bearcats won the next three consecutive points with two kills and an ace.
- A kill by Greene ended the Bearcats run to make it 11-6.
- LU took a 5-0 run to come back within one.
- Kills by Antova, Tyrrell and Greene pushed the Falcons to their first home win of the 2024 season.

Set 1
- Montevallo took a 4-3 advantage over the Jaguars to start the set highlighted by two Eliza Tyrrell kills.
- UM took the next three points with two Nikol Antova kills and a Jaguar error.
- Up 9-7, the Falcons took a four-point swing with two Augusta errors and a kill from Hudson and Tyrrell.
- Augusta went on a 6-2 run while taking advantage of Falcon errors.
- Tyrrell converted on her next four kills to put the Falcons up 23-19.
- Brooklyn Hudson and Danielle Greene combined for a block then a block by Nikol Antova won the set for Montevallo.
Set 2
- Three kills from Hayes, Greene and Antova and three errors by the Jaguars gave the Falcons a 6-2 lead early in the second set.
- Augusta took a 6-1 run on the Falcons with two aces, a kill and three UM errors.
- A kill by Tyrrell ended the run, then an error on Augusta gave the Falcons a 9-8 lead.
- The Jaguars got hot from the floor as they won the next seven out of nine point highlighted by five kills and an ace.
- Montevallo responded with four consecutive points with kills from Antova, Tyrrell and Hudson, three of which assisted by Colton Thompson.
- Tied 18-18, Montevallo won the next three points to take a 21-18 lead.
- Augusta responded by taking the next three out of four points by taking advantage of UM errors.

- With the Falcons needing match point at 24-22, AU flipped the script and won the final five out of six points to win the set 27-25.

- The Jaguars jumped out to a 5-3 lead with three kills and two Falcon errors.
- Montevallo took the lead with a 7-2 run with four kills.
- The Falcons kept the foot on the gas by taking advantage of Jaguar errors.
- Up 14-10, Nikol Antova slammed two balls home for consecutive kills.
- While up 20-15, Eliza Tyrrell converted on a kill and served up an ace to extend the lead to 22-15.
- Kills by Hayes, Hudson and Antova brought it home for the Falcons as they take both ends of today's double-header.
