Falcons Host No. 12 Maryville on Saturday

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo men's lacrosse is set to host No. 12 Maryville on Saturday, March 22 at 12 p.m. in the third ranked matchup of the season for the Falcons.
 
So Far This Season…
Montevallo enters the weekend with a 7-2 overall record after opening 2025 with a dominant 24-15 win over Emmanuel on Feb. 1. The Falcons then kicked off a two-game road trip with a 13-5 win over Mars Hill on Feb. 5 before scoring the most goals in a game this season with a 27-4 road victory at Emory & Henry on Feb. 7. Montevallo suffered its first loss of the season in its first ranked meeting with a 14-13 loss to RV Saint Leo on Thursday, Feb. 13. The Falcons rebounded with a 19-13 home win over Thomas More before falling to Belmont Abbey, 7-6, in a road overtime loss on Feb. 22. Montevallo opened March with an impressive 13-12 win over No. 9 UIndy for just the second ranked win in UM history. Montevallo went on to add a 12-7 win over North Greenville before, most recently, taking a 22-11 win over William Jewell on March 16.
 
Montevallo leads the Peach Belt Conference with an average of 27.78 points per game on league-highs with 16.56 goals per game and 11.22 assists per game. Montevallo also leads the conference with four man-down goals on the season while posting a PBC best 31.44 shots on goal per game. The Falcons are one of the top faceoff teams in the nation with a .689 win percentage that ranks third among Div. II leaders. Defensively, Montevallo allows just 10.09 goals per game with a league-leading .609 save percentage on 15.22 saves per game.
 
Matthew Boas highlights the Falcons' attack with a team-high 42 points on 28 goals and 14 assists while adding a trio of man-up goals, 18 ground balls and two caused turnovers. Caden Chalut ranks second on the squad with 17 goals and six assists for 23 points. James Trainer highlights Montevallo's backline with a team-high 13 caused turnovers while Nolan Ross and Collin Schuster each added 12. Brandon Shaffner has been one of the nation's top faceoff specialists with a .716 win percentage on a 141-for-197 mark.

The Saints head into Saturday as the No. 14 team in the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Poll with a 5-3 overall record. Maryville opened the season with an overtime loss to No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne before picking up a 14-13 overtime win over No. 19 Rockhurst on Feb. 8. Maryville went on to add a 24-7 Feb. 15 win over Davenport in the home opener before topping Alabama Huntsville, 14-3, on Feb. 22. The Saints closed its four-game win streak with a 13-5 road win over Quincy on March 1. Maryville dopped its meeting with No. 1 Tampa, 9-6, on March 8 before falling to No. 16 Saint Leo, 11-9, on March 12. Most recently, Maryville defeated No. 20 Rollins, 16-9, on the road.
 
The Saints rank second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with an average of 21.13 points per game on 13.50 goals and 7.63 assists per game. The Saints have tallied a .273 shooting percentage with 30.25 shots on goal per game on 49.38 shots per game. Maryville has tallied a GLVC-high 10.25 caused turnovers while picking up 32.63 ground balls per game.
 
Maryville is led by Justin Simonson with 34 points on 18 goals and 16 assists while adding eight ground balls and two caused turnovers. Jake Grebe ranks second on the squad with a total of 23 points on 15 goals and eight assists. John Chorlton highlights Maryville's defense with a team-high 13 caused turnovers while adding 23 ground balls. In the net, Dylan Radke leads the goalkeeping corps with just 8.51 goals against average and a .532 save percentage.
 
Series History Against Maryville:
Historically, Montevallo has struggled against Maryville with an 0-5 record all time. The series began with a 7-6 Falcon loss on March 3, 2018. Montevallo suffered its largest defeat of the series on March 14, 2023, when the Falcons fell 14-6. Most recently, Montevallo dropped a March 23, 2024, meeting, 14-8, on the road.
