MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 23 Montevallo softball team secured its first Gulf South Conference series sweep of the season, after taking down Valdosta State, 6-3, in the series finale on Saturday.
Taylor Lloyd led the way in the circle, earning her 17th win and 15th complete game of the season. The senior allowed three runs, while striking out four in seven innings of work.
The Blazers struck first, plating a run in each of the first two innings to take an early 2-0 lead.
Montevallo responded in the bottom of the second, as Makayla Peters doubled down the left field line and Bentlee Stiner brought her home with an RBI-double. The Falcons continued to push, as Riley Tyree singled and Kiley Christopher walked to load the bases. Taylor Rogers followed that up with a huge two-run double to put the Falcons in front, 3-2.
The Falcons added runs in the next two innings, as RBI-singles from Peters and Emma Hawkins stretched the Montevallo lead to 5-2.
The Blazers cut into the deficit, plating a run in the top of the sixth. VSU continued to push, loading the bases, but a huge strikeout from Lloyd ended the threat to keep Montevallo ahead by two runs, 5-3.
The Falcons responded in the bottom half of the sixth, as Rogers hit an RBI-single to score Kiera Olson, extending the lead back out to three runs, 6-3.
Lloyd sat the Blazers down in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the Montevallo, 6-3, victory and the overall series sweep.
