Falcons Drop Pair in GSC Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team fell in a pair of games on Thursday, dropping a first-round matchup to No. 4 Mississippi College (1-4), before falling in an elimination game to No. 1 West Florida (4-5).


GAME ONE | No. 4 Montevallo 1, No. 5 Mississippi College 4

Taylor Lloyd pitched the first two innings, while Kinsley Byrd pitched the final five innings in the first game of the day.

The Choctaws got on the board early, plating a run in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 advantage.

Montevallo threatened in the bottom of the fourth, as Becca Benton singled and pinch runner Kiera Olson advanced to third after a pair of sacrifice hits. A strikeout would end the inning, keeping the Falcons off the board.

MC added a pair of runs through the next two innings to extend the lead to 4-0 heading into the seventh.

The Falcons rallied in the bottom of the seventh, as Riley Tyree and Emma Faulk opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Emma Hawkins hit an RBI-single to score pinch runner Laney Williams, putting the Falcons on the board.  The Choctaws ultimately held on to secure the, 4-1, victory in the opening round.

GAME TWO | No. 4 Montevallo 4, No. 1 West Florida 5

Three pitchers saw action in the circle for Montevallo in Taylor Lloyd, Mya Young, and Kinsley Byrd.

Montevallo looked to strike first in the top of the second inning, as Becca Benton and Bentlee Stiner reached to put a pair of runners in scoring position. An Emma Hawkins sac-fly and a Riley Tyree RBI-single scored both Benton and Stiner to give the Falcons an early 2-0 advantage.

The Argos responded with a run in the second and third innings, to tie the game at two runs apiece.

Montevallo regained the lead in the top of the fifth, as a throwing error scored both Tyree and Lillie Piersol to put the Falcons back in front, 4-2. The Argos responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to put UWF in front for the first time, 5-4.

Montevallo looked to rally in the top of the seventh, as Tyree earned her third hit of the day. The Falcons were unable to bring her home, as UWF ultimately took home the 5-4 victory.
