MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo
men's soccer team (14-4-0, 6-0-0 GSC) celebrated senior night, its
first ever undefeated conference season and Halloween all while
defeating No. 18 University of West Florida (12-3-2, 3-2-1 GSC),
2-0. The Falcons extended its win-streak to 12-straight games and
wrapped up an undefeated conference season for the first time in
school history.
The Falcons honored seven seniors following the match-up. The
seniors were Bryan
Cartmell (Columbia, Tennessee), Chris
Castell (Portsmouth, England), Joe
Gross (Marietta, Georgia), Jonathan
Maloney (West Yorkshire, England), Kevin
Ratigan (Alabaster, Alabama), James
Ward (Chelmsford, England) and Jim
Witherow (Huntsville, Alabama).
Maloney went out with a bang scoring a goal and assisting on
another. His goal tied him for the All-Time lead in the Gulf South
Conference with Barry Gibney (1998-01) who played
at Christian Brothers.
The Falcons and Argonauts played 85 minutes of scoreless soccer
before sophomore Milan
Pualic (Subotica, Serbia) blasted a shot from the top
of the box past the Argo keeper. Maloney and junior Lucas
Manzoli (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had assists on the play.
Just 29 seconds later Maloney connected on a pass from sophomore
Nathaniel
Foster (Brampton, Ontario) and scored the insurance
goal with 3:10 to play.
Sophomore David
Esser (Birmingham, Alabama) picked up his sixth
shutout of the season while making three saves.
The Argonauts played 32 minutes with a man-down after one of
their defenders picked up two yellow cards.
It was another physical Gulf South Conference contest with each
team picking up 22 fouls and the referee handing out six cards.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. as
they take on Harding University in the first round of the GSC
Tournament.
