HARROGATE, England - Former All-American soccer
standout at the University of Montevallo, Jonathan Maloney
(West Yorkshire, England) has signed a professional
contract with Harrogate Town Football Club of the Blue Square North
League in Harrogate, England. Maloney and his new teammates wrapped
up their preseason schedule undefeated with a 2-0-4 record.
Maloney impressed the new HTFC manager Simon Weaver after a
strong preseason performance including a goal in the final
exhibition on August 1. When asked about Maloney following the
August 1 match this is what Weaver had to say:
"Another CV that was really cleverly put together was for Jon
Maloney," said Weaver. "Goals in Montevallo, a university in
America. I look it up on YouTube, and he's there banging the goals
in. So, we got him in for pre-season. We went to his house and his
dad made us a great cup of tea, jaffa cakes as well, me and Kevin
(Sharp) had a great afternoon! He was training with Doncaster
Rovers keeping his fitness up, we went to watch him for a game
there and he impressed. He's a really nice lad, but you think 'has
he got that edge?'. He has. He's got that hard side and you saw
today that aerially he brings a good dimension for us. When we're
under pressure, he's an outlet. You can't go into a league campaign
in the Conference North if you're not strong in the air and
fortunately Jon has those attributes. I think he's really going to
surprise a lot people, because he's been away for four years in
America studying, I think he got Athlete of the Year for the
University. He's got a lot of attributes and I think he's going to
be a surprise player for us, just watch him go."
Maloney will now begin the regular season with the club on
August 8 against Corby Town. To follow Maloney and his professional
