MONTEVALLO, Ala. – No. 21 University of
Montevallo men's soccer team (3-0) dominated from start to
finish against Newberry College (0-2) and won convincingly 4-0. The
Falcons allowed just four shots from Newberry all of which came
from outside the 18-yard box. All three of the Falcons goalkeepers
saw action in the shutout with the majority of the game going to
freshman Brendan
Ledgeway (York, England/All Saints) who made one save
in 60 minutes of action.
Senior's David
Esser (Birmingham, Ala./Oak Mountain) and Brandon Land (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) split
the rest of the time with Esser playing 21 minutes without having
to make a save and Land playing the final seven minutes and making
two saves.
UM's defensive line was outstanding as they won almost
every ball in the air over the Newberry forwards.
The Falcon offense exploded with a season-high 22 shots
including 12 on goal. Just under 20 minutes into the game junior
Phil Jackson (Lincolnshire, England/Queen
Elizabeth's) sent a 45 yard pass into the box which
bounced over the keepers head and gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Senior Austin McIntosh (Sheffield, England/All Saint
Catholic) was credited with the assist.
Just over 21 minutes later senior James
Steer (Sheffield, England/Westfield School) streaked
down the right side and sent a cross into the box that was
collected by fellow senior Michael
Riggle (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier). Riggle made a few
cuts and beat a pair of Newberry defenders and then slipped one by
a diving keeper to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons ended the first half up 2-0 and leading in shots
9-2. UM also won seven corners in the half compared to
Newberry's one.
Just over seven minutes into the second half Nathaniel Foster (Brampton, Ontario/Humberview
Secondary School) sent a throughball to Milan
Pualic (Subotica, Serbia/Srednja Ekonosmka Skola
School) who crossed it over the box to Alex
Ghoja (Elkmont, Ala./Bob Jones) who sent it past the
keeper for the Falcons third goal of the game.
Just barely two minutes later Foster struck again as Gary
O'Neill (Dublin, Ireland/Presentation College)
sent a throughball past the defense which Foster used to beat the
keeper for the Falcons final goal.
UM outshot the Wolves 13-2 in the second half and had many
near-misses.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7:30
p.m. as they host No. 8 Flagler College in their Peach Belt
Conference opener.
