MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In a doubleheader against Stillman College, the University of Montevallo softball team won their fourth and fifth games in a row, defeating the Tigers 6-1 in the first game and 11-3 in the second game.
With the two victories over Stillman, the Falcons move improve their record to 7-3 on the season and are 4-0 against in-state opponents, having swept both Stillman and the University of West Alabama.
In the first game, junior Jostlyn Higgerson (5-1) earned the win, her fifth of the season.
Higgerson came into the game with the second most strikeouts of any pitcher in the Peach Belt conference and added to her impressive total. Eight of the first nine outs recorded by Higgerson came by strikeout.
In all, Higgerson pitched four innings, allowed two hits, one run, no walks, and struck out eight on her way to victory.
Junior Kelsey King closed the door on the game. The Oneonta, Alabama native pitched three scoreless innings, striking out two.
Offensively, the Falcons were paced by junior shortstop Rachael Conley, who went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run.
Freshman Sydney Aguilar and Jessica Mentzer each went 2-for-3, with Mentzer scoring two runs and Aguilar driving in two runs. Each also had an extra base hit, with Mentzer hitting a double and Aguilar recording a triple.
Phoebe Dabbour went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The freshman from Simi Valley, California also stole a base.
Sydney Abounassar went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Hannah McCreless went 1-for-2 with a walk.
The second game would be similar to the first, with the Falcons controlling the game the whole way, earning the 11-3 win in just five innings.
Freshman Celestia Davila, junior Lexes Wilson, and freshman Kaitlynn Thomson went a combined 7-for-9 with six RBIs in the second game. Davila and Thomson each had two doubles, while Wilson had a triple.
Wilson and Thomson each scored two runs, as well.
Freshman Greer Hancock, freshman Dylan Bailey, junior Halie Snider, and Mentzer each had an RBI in the win.
Junior Jana Kelbie Armstrong (1-1) picked up the first win of her career, going five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. She also struck out three batters.
Montevallo (7-3) has now won five straight games. They will be back in action this weekend, traveling to Columbus, Georgia for the Cougar Classic.
