LAKELAND, Fla. – The University of Montevallo softball team split a doubleheader with the Florida Southern Moccasins on Saturday, February 21.
The Falcons (9-7) won the first game 6-4 and dropped the second game by the final score of 5-2.
In the opening game, the first four innings were scoreless. UM was finally able to put a run across in the top half of the fifth. Lexes Wilson singled to right field and scored Dylan Bailey.
UM's lead would be short lived, as the Mocs would score three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Montevallo would respond in the top of the sixth, plating two runs and evening the score at 3-3. Celestia Davila tripled to left center, scoring Kelsey Vining. Davila then came around to score after a Phoebe Dabbour sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh, the Falcons matched their run total through six innings, scoring three times.
First, Wilson picked up her second RBI of the game, doubling home Shelby Clark. Darbi Duke would come around to score after a Vining double. Vining then reached home plate after a Florida Southern throwing error.
The error happened as Vining stole third base, her team-high eighth stolen base of the season.
It would be too much to overcome for Florida Southern, who was able to score once in the bottom half of the frame, but would fall 6-4.
For UM, Jostlyn Higgerson picked up her sixth win of the year, throwing a complete game and striking out four.
Wilson went 3-for-3 in the contest, driving in two runs.
In the second game, Wilson would pick up right where she left off, hitting a two-RBI single in the first inning.
However, the Moccasins would go on to score five unanswered runs between the second, third, and fourth innings, eventually picking up the win.
Kelsey King suffered the loss in the second game of the day and is now 1-2 on the season.
Vining went 3-for-4 in the game, including a double and another stolen base, putting her season total at nine.
Clark went 1-for-1 in a pinch hitting role with a double and a stolen base.
The Falcons will continue their Florida trip tomorrow, February 22, traveling to Eckerd College for a doubleheader with the Tritons.
