MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo junior Sydney Abounassar blasted a grand slam to left-center field in the bottom of the sixth inning against Birmingham-Southern College, giving the Falcons enough breathing room as they held off the Panthers in the final inning to secure a 14-11 victory March 17 in their game supporting the Susan G. Komen Foundation at Orr Park.
Abounassar's grand slam gave the Falcons a 14-7 advantage at the time, which proved critical as the Panthers plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Abounassar drove in five runs and scored two runs in the victory.
Junior Hannah McCreless led the Falcons (15-18) offensively as she finished 3-for-4 at the plate. McCreless drove in three runs and scored one run.
Junior Rachael Conley, who drove in two runs and scored one run, went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Junior Shelby Lopez, who drove in one run and scored one run, finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple.
Freshman Jessica Mentzer, who drove in two runs and scored two runs, went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double. Junior Kelsey Vining finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of stolen bases and scored two runs.
Freshman Celestia Davila went 1-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs. Junior Lexes Wilson finished 1-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Freshman Kaitlynn Thomson went 1-for-1 at the plate in a pinch-hitting role.
Freshmen Darbi Duke and Shelby Clark scored one run each as pinch runners.
Junior Jana Kelbie Armstrong (3-3) earned the win in relief after allowing just two runs on two hits with one walk in one inning in the circle.
Junior Jostlyn Higgerson allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in two stints in the circle.
The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, March 18 as they travel to Florence, Alabama to take on the University of North Alabama in a doubleheader.
First pitch in the opening game is set for 4 p.m.
