MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Against the No. 7 UAH Chargers, the University of Montevallo softball team held its own, playing two competitive games with GSC powerhouse, but ultimately fell twice in the doubleheader, 7-1 and 4-1.
The lone Montevallo run of the first contest came on a solo home run to right field from freshman Kelsey Vining. It was Vining's fourth home run of the year.
The Plano, Texas native went 2-for-3 in the game.
Hannah McCreless, Sydney Aguilar, Kaitlynn Thomson, and Shelby Lopez also had hits for UM.
In the circle, Montevallo was solid, allowing just four earned runs over seven innings to the potent Charger lineup.
Jostlyn Higgerson (13-14) was tagged with the loss, allowing four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
Jana Kelbie Armstrong relieved Higgerson and was impressive to close out the game, pitching 2 2/3 innings without allowing an earned UAH run.
In the second game, Vining again shined in her leadoff role, going 2-for-4, including a double.
Vining also stole three bases, moving her season total up to a Peach Belt Conference leading 27. She is a perfect 27-for-27 in stolen base attempts this year.
Celestia Davila had a hit and an RBI, while Jessica Mentzer also had a hit.
Higgerson (13-15) again took the loss, but remained impressive against the vaunted lineup, allowing just three earned runs over five innings.
Kelsey King pitched the final two innings for UM, only giving up one hit and not allowing any runs.
Montevallo (17-22, 7-7 PBC) returns to conference action this weekend on the road. The Falcons will head to St. Augustine, Florida on Saturday, March 28, for a noon doubleheader with the Flagler College Saints.
