ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of Montevallo softball team split a doubleheader with conference foe Flagler College on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 4-1 and running away with game two, 10-2.
The first game of the doubleheader got underway with a familiar sight for Falcon fans, as Kelsey Vining, the Peach Belt Conference leader in stolen bases, recorded a leadoff single and then proceed to steal her 28th and 29th bases of the season.
Vining was brought home from third on a Hannah McCreless bunt single.
Vining has yet to be caught stealing this season.
The freshman from Plano, Texas also leads the Falcons in batting average, hitting .394 on the season.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, they would not be able to match the Flagler bats, as Vining, McCreless, and Jessica Mentzer were the only three from UM to record a base hit.
Jostlyn Higgerson (13-16) had a pair of strikeouts over six innings and was pegged with the loss.
The second game was a much different story, as UM earned the convincing win over the Saints.
The 10-2 win for UM tied the second largest margin of victory in program history.
After trailing 2-0, Montevallo scored 10 straight runs: three in the third inning and seven in the fifth inning.
Vining went 2-for-3, driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice herself. She also stole her 30th base of the season in the game.
Celestia Davila and Sydney Abounassar also had two RBIs apiece in the contest. Shelby Lopez and McCreless each had RBIs, as well.
Dylan Bailey had a double, and Rachael Conley had a single in addition to scoring two runs.
Jana Kelbie Armstrong (4-4) got the win, allowing just two runs over four innings on just five hits.
Kelsey King had a hitless inning of relief.
Montevallo (18-23, 8-8) is back on the diamond tomorrow, traveling to Savannah, Georgia to face the Pirates of Armstrong State in a doubleheader.
First pitch is scheduled for noon.
