SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Montevallo softball team won one game in Sunday's doubleheader against the Armstrong State Pirates, defeating ASU 11-1 in the first game before falling 6-0 in the second contest.
Jessica Mentzer had a three-run home run in the first inning of the first game, scoring Kelsey Vining and Celestia Davila.
It was the fourth home run of the season for the freshman.
It would not be the only home run of the inning for UM, as Sydney Abounassar hit her third blast of the season, a two-run shot to right field that also scored Hannah McCreless.
The Falcons jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Pirates could even take their first at-bat of the contest.
UM would tack on two more runs in the fourth inning. First, Vining recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice, scoring Lexes Wilson. Vining would eventually score when Mentzer picked up her fourth RBI of the game on a single to right field.
Vining stole third during that sequence, her PBC-best 31st stolen base of the year.
In the seventh inning, with Montevallo leading 7-1, Phoebe Dabbour hit her third home run of the season to extend the Falcon advantage. In fact, with the bases loaded, Dabbour picked up four RBIs in one at-bat with a grand slam to centerfield.
Jostlyn Higgerson pitched three innings, giving up no runs and striking out three while allowing just two hits.
Jana Kelbie Armstrong (5-4) picked up the win in four innings of work, surrendering a single run.
In the second game, Higgerson (13-17) suffered the loss. Kelsey King faced one batter and did not allow a hit.
Vining had another hit for UM.
Montevallo (19-24, 9-9) currently sits in seventh place in the Peach Belt Conference. The top eight teams in the league will advance to the conference tournament.
UM will host a conference doubleheader this Tuesday, March 31. North Georgia, who is currently leading the conference and is undefeated in Peach Belt play, will come to the University of Montevallo Softball Stadium at Orr Park; first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
