UM upsets #6 Georgia College; splits doubleheader

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Facing the No. 6 team in the country, the University of Montevallo softball team was able to win the first game of Friday's doubleheader in 10 innings, 4-3.

Hannah McCreless had the walk-off hit that won the game.

The Falcons struck first in the game. Kelsey Vining had a leadoff single, stole second, and ended up on third after a Celestia Davila sacrifice bunt.

Vining was then brought home on a Jessica Mentzer sacrifice fly.

Vining's steal of second base was her 32nd steal of the year, which leads the Peach Belt Conference. She has yet to be caught stealing this season.

Davila picked up a key two-out, two-RBI base knock in the bottom of the fifth that put the Falcons back on top after the Bobcats had drawn even.

Georgia College would again have an answer, scoring twice in the top of the sixth and forcing extra innings.

Montevallo would be able to hold down the potent bats of the Bobcats in extras, and won on a McCreless hit to right field in the 10th.

McCreless drove home Vining, who scored three of the four runs in the game for the Falcons.

Kelsey King pitched the extra frames for the Falcons, allowing no runs and four hits. The junior picked up her second win of the year in the game.

King replaced Jostlyn Higgerson, who threw the first seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out three.

It was just the second conference loss of the season for Georgia College and the fifth loss overall for the #6 Bobcats.

In the second game, the Bobcats would earn the series split, winning 6-1.

Sydney Abounassar had an RBI double for UM in that contest.

Montevallo is back on the diamond tomorrow, hosting the University of North Georgia. UNG currently leads the PBC and is eighth in the country; first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
