Delta State gets a pair of victories at UM

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In its final non-conference series of the season, the University of Montevallo softball team dropped a pair of contests to Delta State on Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcons fell in the first game 6-2 and lost the second game 12-2.

Wednesday afternoon featured the second and third meetings of the year between the two teams, with Delta State earning a victory in all three contests.

The first game was tied 1-1 after three innings, when UM scored in the bottom of the third to draw even with the quick striking Lady Statesmen.

Kelsey Vining led off with a single up the middle and stole second for her PBC-leading 33rd stolen base of the year.

A single by fellow freshman Jessica Mentzer would score Vining and tie the game up.

Delta State would go on to score five runs over the next four innings to pull away from Montevallo and get the win.

Montevallo scored in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run from Sydney Abounassar, her fourth of the year. Abounassar's home run tied her for the team lead with Vining and Mentzer.

Jostlyn Higgerson (13-19) took the loss, pitching six innings and striking out four batters.

Jana Kelbie Armstrong pitched the seventh inning, allowing just one hit and no runs.

Lexes Wilson went 2-for-3 in the game, including a double. She now has nine doubles on the season, which is the second-most on the team.

The second game would be controlled by Delta State, scoring seven runs in the first two innings and never looking back.

Phoebe Dabbour hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Falcons. Her shot to right center was her fourth of the year, tying her for the team lead with Abounassar, Vining, and Mentzer.

Kelsey King (2-5) was given the loss for UM.

Armstrong again impressed in relief, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing just a single earned run.

Wilson also tallied another hit to add to her impressive day.

The Falcons (20-29, 10-12) will play their final PBC doubleheader of the season this Friday, April 10. GRU Augusta will come to Montevallo, and first pitch is schedule for 2 p.m.
