LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Montevallo freshman Kelsey Vining has earned recognition from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The Plano, Texas native has been named one of the final 25 candidates for the NFCA's Freshman of the Year Award.
The Falcons' leadoff hitter has started every game for UM. She is currently batting .392, which leads the team and is the 10th best average in the Peach Belt Conference.
Vining leads the conference in runs scored (46), hits (65), and stolen bases (33).
She is also second in the league in doubles (12), fourth in triples (3), and third in total bases (95).
In all of the categories listed above, Vining is the team leader for UM, as well.
She also leads the Falcons in slugging percentage (.572) and on-base percentage (.436).
In the field, Vining has also been a standout; she has not committed an error this year and has four assists from her spot in centerfield.
Vining and the Falcons play their final regular season doubleheader tonight, April 9, against GRU Augusta. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the University of Montevallo Softball Stadium at Orr Park.
