Montevallo set to take on Indianapolis in first ever postseason apperance

MONTEVALLO, Ala.-The University of Montevallo men's lacrosse team will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to take on the University of Indianapolis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

This is the first ever postseason appearance for the Falcons' men's lacrosse program.

Montevallo will take on the Greyhounds in a semifinal match Friday, April 26at 3 p.m. Central/ 4 p.m. Eastern. "It's pretty special to see something come together that you've worked for since August," said Head Coach Jason Lange. "I'm happy for the guys it is going to be a great experience for them and for our program."

In 2018, during the inaugural season, Montevallo finished in fifth place in the GLVC conference standings. However, the Falcons finished with a 3-3 record in the GLVC this season, to clinch a spot in the tournament for the first time in program history as the No. 4 seed.

Indianapolis (12-1 overall, 6-1 in the GLVC) earned the No.1 seed in the tournament and will host the GLVC conference semifinal and final. The Greyhounds finished with a 6-0 record in conference and 12-1 record overall and enter the post season ranked No.6 nationally in the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll.

The Falcons (6-8 overall, 3-3 in the GLVC) clinched their spot in the conference tournament following a 30-8 win against Shorter University on the road in Rome, Georgia in the final regular season game last week. The Falcons enter the conference tournament on a two-game win streak.

The winner of this matchup will advance to the conference tournament semifinal match Sunday April 28, at Key Stadium in Indianapolis.

Montevallo enters the post season after a historical season. Sophomore Thomas Vaesen scored 11 goals in two separate games this season, tying him for second all-time in single-game scoring in the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse record books. Vaesen has totaled 70 goals during his sophomore campaign to lead the nation in goals scored and is just 16 goals behind the record for goals scored single season. The Victoria, British Columbia, native is currently second in the nation in goals per game and points per game with an average of 5.00 and 6.00 per game, respectively.

Vaesen isn't the only Falcon having a historical season, freshman face-off specialist Luke Stephens has also etched his name in the NCAA record books. Stephens set the record for face-offs won and taken in the win over Shorter, as he went 34-of-42 on face-offs. Stephens also ranks third in the GLVC in ground balls per game, averaging 7.79 per game.

Montevallo last faced Indianapolis on April 6, in Montevallo, falling to the Greyhounds in a tightly contested matchup, 14-12. "We took advantage of some of the mistakes they made, and we capitalized on them, but we have to stay out of the penalty box, I think that hurt us in the first matchup and we have to clear the ball better," said Lange. At the time of the first meeting, Indianapolis was ranked No.9 nationally. "Playing in a game of that magnitude against a team that is that good I think really helped us and even though we didn't win the game, gave us confidence going forward to know that we can play with some of the best teams in the country," Lange added. Vaesen totaled five goals and one ground ball in the loss. The Falcons edged Indianapolis in face-offs 16-13.

Defensively, the Falcons are anchored by sophomore Goalkeeper, Kyle Little. The West Milford, New Jersey native recorded 21 saves in the matchup against Indianapolis earlier this season.
