MONTEVALLO, Ala. — With Wednesday's doubleheader against Miles College having been canceled, the University of Montevallo softball team will end its four-day break from action on Friday when it travels to Carrollton, Ga., to start a three-game series against the University of West Georgia.
The two-day, three-game series will begin on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. CT, before concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22 starting at 12 p.m. CT and the finale starting 30 minutes after the conclusion on the noon game.
QUICK HITTERS
- Mychael McMillan became the second Montevallo player to earn the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week when she picked up the honor earlier this week. McMillian, in two starts against No. 4 West Florida, tossed two seven-inning complete games while allowing only three earned runs. She struck out 14 and issued only four walks and held opponents to a .128 batting average.
- Haley Barnette also had a strong five-game slate last week as the shortstop hit .611 (9-16) with 18 total bases, seven runs scored, four runs batted in, three doubles, two home runs, two walks, one intentional walk and one stolen base. For the week, Barnette slashed .563/.611/1.125, including hitting .375 against the Argonauts.
- Montevallo is off to its best start in Gulf South Conference play with a 2-1 mark through its first three games. Since jumping back into the GSC prior to the start of the 2018 season, the Falcons have a 33-32 all-time record in GSC action.
SCOUTING THE WOLVES
- West Georgia has played 11 total games so far this season and has four players with 10-or-more hits with Hannah Scarbrough leading the way with 14 hits in 40 at bats. Kristyn Nix (12), Raven Smith (12) and Leslie Brodgen (11) round out the quartet of Wolves.
- In the circle, Lexi Close and Morgan Goree have been the workhorses for UWG as the two have combined to throw 52.1 of the Wolves' 70.1 innings this season. Close had a 4-2 record in six appearances, while Goree has a 1-1 mark in seven appearances.
- West Georgia is coming off a series victory over Lee after outscoring the Flames, 18-10, over three games. UWG took Saturday's doubleheader over Lee by a combined, 17-3, before dropping Sunday's finale 6-1.
SERIES HISTORY
- The University of Montevallo holds a 6-1 edge over the University of West Georgia in the series history.
- Montevallo has never dropped a softball game against UWG played in Carrollton, Ga. In four all-time games played in Carrollton, the Falcons have outscored the Wolves 21-9.
- UM is riding a two-game winning streak over West Georgia after taking the final two games of a three-game series during the 2019 season.
