Box Score MONTEVALLO, Alabama—The University of Montevallo men's soccer team fell at home on Friday afternoon to Auburn University at Montgomery 4-1. This game marks the beginning of the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series for the Falcons, a four-game conference slate before the conference tournament begins on March 17.
UM challenged the Warhawks early, as
Nemanja Acimovic put a shot on goal at the 3:15 mark. After a save, the Falcons then earned four straight corner kicks over a two-minute span, but could not find the back of the net early.
After some back and forth, AUM opened the scoring with a goal at the 20:04 mark. The Warhawks kept the pressure on, striking again at 29:39 to give them a 2-0 lead.
Cyprien N'Goma put another shot on goal for UM at the 37:41 mark, but again the Falcons were unlucky and could not find the back of the net. Montevallo earned another corner late in the first half, but could not make anything of the opportunity.
After taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, AUM came out and aimed for a strong, defensive-minded second half. The Warhawks stymied the Falcons early in the second stanza, not allowing shot until over 13 minutes into the half.
AUM continued to play the possession game, and struck again at the 82:19 mark to extend their lead.
Despite trailing 3-0, Montevallo kept the intensity up and earned a penalty kick at 84:15.
Ruben Carvalho converted the PK for UM to put the Falcons on the board.
The Warhawks were not complacent and managed to light up the scoreboard again at the 86:29 mark to push their lead back to three goals where the final whistle blew at 4-1.
AUM outshot Montevallo 15-10, however, each team managed seven shots on goal. UM dominated in corner kicks, earning nine while only allowing three.
Acimovic tallied two shots, both of which were on target. N'Goma,
Fausto Castillo,
Salia Carr,
Fabio Menzel and
Ruben Carvalho, who scored Montevallo's lone goal, each added one shot on goal.
Casey Jones, who earned the start in goal for UM, faced seven shots and saved three.
