Softball falls 12-1 to No. 4 UT Tyler

Box Score MADISONVILLE, Texas—The University of Montevallo softball team lost 12-1 to No. 4 University of Texas at Tyler in five innings on Friday afternoon. The Falcons are now 0-3 on the season, with all three games being played against non-conference opponents. The second game of today's doubleheader was cancelled due to inclement weather.

UM's Leadoff batter Mariel Bertossi (Ronchi dei Legionari, Italy) singled down the left field line to open the game for the Falcons. She then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball to stand just 60 feet away from home plate.  After two quick outs, Sierra Easterwood (Cullman, Alabama) stepped up to the plate and drove a single to left field to send Bertossi home and put the Falcons up 1-0.

UT Tyler was kept off the board in the bottom of the first, but put up six runs in the bottom of the second, all of which were unearned. A three-run RBI triple gave the Patriots the lead in the home half of the second and they never looked back.

After the six-run second inning, UT Tyler put up four more in the third and two in the fourth to give them their final tally of 12.

Easterwood went 1-for-2 on the day, driving in UM's first run of the year. Bertossi also went 1-for-2 while scoring the run. Alexis Cortez (Bonaire, Georgia) was the only other Falcon to record a hit, going 1-for-1 with a double in the third.

Kaylee Hawkins (Huntsville, Alabama) (0-2) got the start in the circle for UM, pitching 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. All five of the runs scored during Hawkins' time on the rubber were unearned. Mychael McMillan (Centerville, Alabama) gave up four earned runs on three hits in one complete inning pitched. Kaitlyn Flugga (DuPoint, Washington) pitched 1.1 innings for the Falcons, surrendering three runs, two earned, and four hits while striking out one.

UM had four errors in the field to make six of the 12 Patriots' runs unearned.

UP NEXT: Montevallo will face No. 4 UT Tyler again tomorrow for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 12 p.m. in Madisonville, Texas.
