Shen Named to IWLCA All-South Region Second Team, Earns First All-Region Award in Program History

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – For the First time in the University of Montevallo women's lacrosse program history, the Falcons have earned an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region honoree.

Senior defender Ashley Shen has been named to the IWLCA All-South Region Second Team and becomes the first player in program history to do so.

Shen, a native of Erin, Ontario, Canada, earns the award after an incredible senior campaign in which she was named the Gulf South Conference Defender of the Year and a First Team All-GSC selection.

This season, Shen led the Gulf South Conference in caused turnovers (53), caused turnovers per game (3.53), ground balls (55), and ground balls per game (3.67).  Additionally, her 3.67 ground balls per game currently rank ninth across NCAA Division-II. She is also the NCAA statistical leader in caused turnovers per game at 3.53 at the current moment – a number that will likely hold through the conclusion of the postseason.

Through the course of the season, Shen etched her name in the Montevallo record book by setting the all-time career-caused turnover record at 113. She also set the single-game caused turnover record on two separate occasions. On Feb. 24, she recorded seven caused turnovers to break the previous record. In the season finale, she shattered her record with nine caused turnovers in the win over Young Harris.

"I'm extremely proud of not only Ashley's performance this season but her entire career here at Montevallo," said Head Coach Adrianna Piontek. "She has great natural gifts, but they are nothing compared to her work ethic and desire to be the best she can be for her teammates."
