Volleyball Falls to Auburn Montgomery in Five Sets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team falls to Auburn Montgomery in five sets on Thursday, Oct. 17 at the AUM Athletics Complex.

GAME NOTES
  • Colton Thompson tied her season-high in assists with 29. She recorded her third double-double of the season with 29 assists/15 digs.
  • Nikol Antova led all players in the match with 21 kills. Antova had her sixth double-double of the season with a 21 kills/10 digs. She now leads the GSC with 263 kills on the season.
  • With 10 kills, Brooklyn Hudson now has four matches this season with double-digit kills.
  • Ava Wind now leads the Gulf South with 310 digs as she added 29 to her total.
  • This is the Falcons second loss in a five set match this season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1
  • After the Warhawks opened with three consecutive points, Montevallo fought back with a 3-0 run of their own with a kill by Eliza Tyrrell and Nikol Antova. Brooklyn Hudson and Claire Hayes also combined for a block.
  • Down 8-11, UM tied the set with three points, all errors on Auburn Montgomery.
  • Montevallo took the lead off a kill by Hudson. Soon after, AUM took three straight points.
  • UM exploded for seven consecutive points highlighted by three kills from Antova, an ace from Blakeley Robbins and a block from Aliyah Thompson and Danielle Greene.
  • At a deficit of 19-23, the Warhawks won four straight points with two kills, an ace and a Falcon miscue.
  • Tied 24-24, Montevallo got a huge kill by Antova. UM won the set on a block combined by Hudson and Greene.
  • AUM lost the set despite having their most kills in a set this match with 18.
 
Set 2
  • AUM opened the set with a 5-2 run.
  • Down 3-6, Montevallo got hot from the court with four kills from Greene, A. Thompson and Antova, two aces by Robbins and two AUM miscues.
  • Auburn Montgomery killed the Falcon run with a kill then added three more points for a 4-0 run of their own.
  • While up 17-15, UM extended their lead with a 7-1 run.
  • Montevallo took the set and went up 2-0 in the match with a kill by Greene assisted by C. Thompson.
 
Set 3
  • After AUM took the opening point, the Falcons took the lead quickly with two kills from Hudson and a kill from Greene, all assisted by Colton Thompson.
  • Nikol Antova connected on two kills to give Montevallo a 6-4 advantage.
  • The Warhawks battled back and took the lead with an 8-0 run.
  • While up 14-10, AUM took another momentum swing by taking the next six out of seven points including four Falcon errors.
  • Auburn Montgomery ended up taking a dominate set with a 5-1 run to finish of the Falcons in the third set.
  • UM had their worst hitting percentage of the match at -.026.
 
Set 4
  • Tied at 3-3, AUM won the next five out of six points highlighted by three kills.
  • Montevallo heated up with a 6-2 run in the middle of the set including five kills by Maggie McColley, Claire Hayes, Brooklyn Hudson and Nikol Antova.
  • Down 13-17, the Falcons tied the set at 18-18 with three kills, a block and a Warhawk attack error.
  • AUM took the lead with a 4-1 run.
  • The Warhawks tied the match up at 2-2 with two consecutive kills.
  • The Falcons had their most kills in a set this match with 16.
  • Colton Thompson and Blakeley Robbins combined for 14 assists this set.
 
Set 5
  • AUM took a quick lead on the Falcons in the deciding set with three kills, an ace and a Falcon attack error.
  • Montevallo connected on four consecutive kills to bring themselves within one point of the Warhawks down 10-11. Colton Thompson had three assists in the run.
  • The Falcons took a 3-1 run after with an ace by Ava Wind and two kills by Nikol Antova.
  • AUM took the next two points.
  • Antova's fifth kill of the set tied it up at 14-14.
  • The Warhawks won the match by finishing off the Falcons with a 3-1 run.
