Volleyball Falls Despite Double-Double From Colton Thompson

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team dropped their match against Union despite a double-double from Colton Thompson on Saturday, Nov. 9 inside Central State Bank Arena.

GAME NOTES
  • Colton Thompson had her fourth double-double of the season with 16 assists and 11 digs. Thompson added two service aces.
  • Claire Hayes turned in a great performance with 12 kills on a .364 hitting percentage. Hayes recorded four total blocks.
  • Blakeley Robbins was solid with 21 assists, six digs and two aces.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1
  • After Union took a 4-2 lead, Montevallo battled back by winning the next three points with kills from Eliza Tyrrell and Claire Hayes. Ava Wind gave the Falcons the lead with an ace.
  • The Bulldogs tied the score at 5-5. UM went on a 7-0 run including two kills by Hayes, two aces by C. Thompson and three attack errors on Union.
  • Montevallo grabbed a double-digit lead with a kill by Danielle Greene, an ace from Grace Petro and a block by Greene and Hudson.
  • UU won the next four consecutive points on two aces, a kill and a Falcon attack error.
  • The Bulldogs fought to stay in the set with a 6-1 run but kills by Aliyah Thompson and Katie Wilkerson gave the Falcons the first set.
  • UM had their highest hitting percentage in a set during the match at .267.
 
Set 2
  • Union gained the lead with a 3-0 run after the Falcons were up 3-1.
  • Tied at 5-5, the Bulldogs took the next three points with a kill and two Falcon errors.
  • Montevallo responded with a 3-1 run including two Aliyah Thompson kills and a kill by Claire Hayes.
  • After a kill by Eliza Tyrrell, Union won the next six out of seven points with two kills and four Falcon miscues.
  • UM threatened with a comeback after an ace from Robbins and a kill from Hudson.
  • UU ended the set on a 4-1 run highlighted by two aces and two kills.
 
Set 3
  • For the second set in a row, the Falcons snatched the earlier lead with a kill from Wilkerson and Hudson, an ace by Hayes and a Bulldog error.
  • The Bulldogs took the lead with a 4-0 run.
  • Montevallo took the lead back with a 6-1 run including an ace by Robbins, a kill by Wilkerson and four Union attack errors.
  • Union stole the lead back with a 6-2 run.
  • Danielle Greene tied the set at 16-16 with a huge block.
  • The Bulldogs went on another 6-2 run to pull ahead.
  • The Falcons stormed back and took the lead with a 5-0 run with two kills by Hudson, a kill by Hayes and two UU errors. Katie Wilkerson and Claire Hayes combined for a block in the run.
  • UU won the set by going on a 4-1 run including three Falcon errors.
 
Set 4
  • Tied 1-1, Montevallo took advantage of three consecutive Union attack errors.
  • Union took the lead in the set with a 10-3 run.
  • UM earned the next two points by forcing two Union errors.
  • The Falcons went on a 3-0 run with kills by Wilkerson and Hayes. Morgan Netcott had a serving ace in the run.
  • The Bulldogs pulled ahead with three straight kills and ended the match off a Falcon set error.
 
UP NEXT
Montevallo will next be in action on Thursday, Nov. 14 as UM takes on Auburn Montgomery in their last home match of the regular season.
