Falcons Complete Final Day of Reddie-Tiger Invitational

ARKADELPHIA, Ar. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team finishes their opening weekend of the 2024 season at the Reddie-Tiger Invitational.
 
In the first match of the day, Montevallo fell to tournament host, Ouachita Baptist, 0-3. In the final match of the tournament for the Falcons, they suffered defeat by the hands of Southeastern Oklahoma State, 0-3.
 
Claire Hayes led the Falcons with 12 kills on the day with three total blocks. Colton Thompson assisted on 25 kills on the day as she had double-digit assist in both matches. Freshman Ava Wind turned in two 10 dig matches.

GAME NOTES
  • Claire Hayes was solid for the Falcons with nine kills, a block and a dig on a .250 hitting percentage.
  • Colton Thompson had 11 assists, an ace, a dig and a block for Montevallo.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED


Set 1
  • Ouachita Baptist hit at a .520 percentage compared to the Falcons .037 in the first set.
  • Down early, 4-5, OBU exploded on an 8-1 run with four kills and four errors committed by Montevallo.
  • After both teams traded points, the Tigers took the next six points including four kills.
  • OBU put the set away with five consecutive kills and a huge block to close out the set.

Set 2
  • While Ouachita took an early 4-2 lead, Montevallo responded with a six-point swing led by three Claire Hayes kills and one from Nikol Antova.
  • The Tigers stormed back with a 5-0 run with four kills and a Falcon error.
  • Katie Wilkerson slammed a beautiful set by Blakeley Robbins to tie the set at 11-11.
  • Both teams traded two-point swings including a service ace by Colton Thompson.
  • UM took a 17-16 lead following kills from Danielle Greene and Nikol Antova with assists from Colton Thompson.
  • Tied at 20-20, Montevallo took the lead off two attack errors by the Tigers.
  • Another kill by Katie Wilkerson off a set by Blakeley Robbins pushed the lead to 23-21.
  • Ouachita Baptist stormed back with four consecutive points to steal the second set from the Falcons.

Set 3
  • The third set saw the Tigers dominate the Falcons 25-10. OBU converted 14 kills off 26 attacks for a .500 hit percentage.
  • Montevallo had eight kills in the set but saw seven attack error prove to be costly.

HOW IT HAPPENED


Set 1
  • Southeastern Oklahoma was the first to 10 as they jumped to a 10-5 lead with the help of converting on five kills.
  • UM battled back with two kills from Katie Wilkerson.
  • SEOS won the next three points to take a 14-9 lead over Montevallo.
  • While down 21-15, UM rattled off the next four out of five points to shorten the gap to 22-19.
  • The Storm finished off the Falcons by winning the next three out of four points with two kills and a Falcon miscue.

Set 2  
Set 3
  • The third set saw both teams tied at 7-7.
  • The Storm took the lead by winning the next five out of six points.
  • While up 21-20, Southeastern Oklahoma finished off the Falcons by taking the final four points of the match.
  • Both teams combined for 25 errors.
 
UP NEXT
The Falcons will next be in action next weekend when they travel to Aiken, South Carolina for the USC Aiken Invitational. Montevallo will face off with North Greenville on Friday, Sept. 13 at 5:00 p.m. CT and then will take on Carson-Newman and Francis Marion on Saturday, Sept. 14.
