MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo Athletics has named Wrestling's
Cole Hunt and Women's Basketball's
Elyse Hughes as the Montevallo Players of the Week presented by Jack's for the week of Dec. 15.
Cole Hunt (Wrestling)
Cole Hunt turned in an outstanding performance at the 46th Annual Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, delivering one of the strongest individual weekends of his season and earning a seventh-place finish in the highly competitive 125-pound bracket.
Hunt opened the tournament by securing his spot in the final day of competition after going 3-1 on Saturday, highlighted by his 11th and 12th pins of the season. He sealed his advancement with a hard-fought 15-9 decision over Roberto Estrada of Western Colorado.
On Sunday, Hunt elevated his performance even further, posting a 3-1 record to lock in seventh place. He began the day with a 9-0 major decision over Mason Gutenberger (UMary) and followed with an 11-2 major decision against Braydon Mitchell (Emmanuel). After a narrow 4-2 loss to No. 7 Logan Sallot (Gannon), Hunt closed the tournament in impressive fashion with a 16-8 major decision over No. 5 Colton Drousias (Glenville State).
Through the Midwest Classic, Hunt continued to pace the Falcons, leading the team with 21 total wins on the season, while consistently competing against ranked opponents on the national stage.
Elyse Hughes (Women's Basketball)
Senior forward
Elyse Hughes delivered a strong and steady week for the Falcons, emerging as a consistent presence on both ends of the floor across two Gulf South Conference contests. Hughes averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, while shooting an efficient 56.5 percent from the field in heavy minutes.
Hughes led Montevallo in its match up against Delta State, finishing just shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds in 34 minutes of action. She provided key scoring stretches throughout the contest, including back-to-back baskets early in the second half that helped spark a Falcon response.
She followed that performance with another efficient outing in Montevallo's 70-59 victory over Mississippi College, scoring 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting while adding six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Hughes played a crucial role during key momentum swings, halting opposing runs and contributing to Montevallo's strong interior presence as the Falcons secured their first conference win of the season.
Hughes' consistent scoring, rebounding, and defensive effort were instrumental in Montevallo's competitive week and overall team success.
