Falcons Split Day Two of Chillout

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. – The Montevallo softball team split the second day of the Chillout, taking down Young Harris 9-7 and falling to Georgia Southwestern 2-1.

GAME ONE
Taylor Lloyd earned the start on the mound and went 4.1 innings pitched. Rachel Whiddon earned her second relief appearance of the weekend, and ultimately allowed one hit and no runs in 2.2 innings to secure her first win of the season.

Young Harris struck first, plating a run in the bottom of the first, to take an early 1-0 lead.

Montevallo found its way on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Emma Faulk opened the inning with a leadoff single up the middle. Her pinch runner Skylar Johnson advanced to second on the next at bat and Riley Tyree hit a two-out RBI single to score her and put the Falcons on the board.

Young Harrris responded in the bottom half of the inning, putting up a two spot to regain the lead, 3-1.

The Falcons built a response of its own in the next inning. With two outs and Kennedy Hussey at first base, Becca Benton hit an RBI-double to cut the deficit to, 3-2. Faulk followed that up with an RBI-single up the middle to score Benton and tie the game, 3-3. The Falcons continued the two-out rally, as Ariana Pinder hit an RBI-single which scored Faulk and gave UM its first lead, 4-3, in the top of the fourth.

The Mountain Lions responded right away, plating two runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, 5-4.

Bentlee Stiner singled to open the top of the fifth and Benton came up with a huge two-out RBI single later in the inning to tie the game, 5-5.

Young Harris responded yet again, plating a pair of runs for the third consecutive time to take a, 7-5, lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Montevallo continued to push, as the Falcons fought back in the top of the sixth. Ariana Pinder stood at third with two outs, but the Falcons strung together multiple stellar two-out at-bats. Stiner singled to right field to score Pinder cutting the deficit to, 7-6. After Stiner stole second, Molly Pendley tripled to left field to bring home Stiner and tie the game, 7-7. The Falcons were not done yet, as Kiley Christopher provided an RBI-single to score Pendley and put Montevallo back in front 8-7.

The Mountain Lions looked to respond again in the bottom of the sixth, as YHC had two runners on with two out, but Rachel Whiddon earned a huge strikeout to end the inning and crush the threat.

Montevallo added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Tyree hit an RBI-single to score Madison Fargo, giving the Falcons a, 9-7, advantage.

Whiddon sat the Mountain Lions down in order in the bottom of the seventh and the Falcons took home the 9-7 victory.

GAME NOTES GAME TWO
Despite losing game two, Berkley Mooney had a solid outing on the mound. The freshman only allowed two hits and one run which was unearned in 6.2 innings pitched. Mooney picked up three strikeouts.

Montevallo struck first, as Emma Hawkins opened the game with a leadoff single to left field. Hawkins advanced to third on a pass ball and an RBI-groundout from Pinder scored Hawkins and put the Falcons up 1-0.

The Lady Canes responded in the bottom of the first, plating a run to tie the game, 1-1.

Both pitchers settled in and neither team could find scoring throughout the next several innings.

Montevallo threatened in the top of the sixth, putting two runners on with two outs, but the Falcons were unable to capitalize.

Georgia Southwestern got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but a crucial Mooney strikeout ended the threat and sent the game to extra innings.

Georgia Southwestern was ultimately able to score in the bottom of the eighth and take home the 2-1 victory.
