GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team continued its recent hot streak with a 3-1 win over Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 4.
The Falcons defeated the Bearcats 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23.
Montevallo (11-3 overall, 4-2 in Peach Belt Conference) is streaking in the middle of conference play, having won 11 of their past 13 matches.
Senior Manyi Ati led the Falcons with a season-high 18 kills to go along with 18 digs as she posted her seventh double-double of the season.
Senior Michelle Carle and sophomore Rebekah Phelps added 15 kills each, while junior Katie Best contributed eight kills. Fellow junior Sarah Guidry chipped in five kills.
Senior Kaleigh Harvey posted a team-high 26 digs. Sophomore Briana Marquez contributed a team-high 55 assists, which tied her career high, to go along with 10 digs as she posted her seventh double-double of the season.
The Falcons took the opening set against the Bearcats, 25-20. Montevallo ended the set with a 10-5 run, capped with a set-clinching kill by Carle. Carle and Ati led the Falcons with five kills each in the first set.
Lander responded with a 25-22 win in the second set. The Falcons battled throughout the set, keeping the margin within three points. After cutting the Bearcats' lead to 23-22 on a kill by Phelps late in the set, Lander responded with back-to-back points to clinch the set. Ati led Montevallo with five kills in the set.
Montevallo closed the third set with a 7-0 run to secure a 25-19 win in the frame and give the Falcons a 2-1 lead in the match. Guidry, who entered the match for the first time in the third set, led the Falcons with five kills late in the set.
The Falcons overcame a two-point deficit midway through the fourth set to clinch the match with a 25-23 win in the frame. Carle capped the match with a pair of kills to help Montevallo secure the 3-1 victory over the Bearcats.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Oct. 5 with a Peach Belt Conference match on the road at USC Aiken.
