PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team started out slow in Saturday afternoon's matchup, struggling from the field early on. However, behind a strong defensive effort, the shots started to fall, and the Falcons were able to pull away from the University of West Florida Argonauts and earn the 69-58 win.
This is the seventh win in a row to start the season for 12th ranked Montevallo Falcons.
The Argonauts jumped out to quick start in the contest and led 24-17 with less than ten minutes remaining in the first half.
Montevallo responded to the West Florida run with a 12-0 run of their own. The Falcons overtook the Argonaut lead on a three point basket from Ryan May, who was only playing in his second game of the season after suffering an injury in the preseason.
At halftime, the Falcons led the Argonauts 32-28.
In the second half, Montevallo started to hit their stride and put considerable distance between themselves and West Florida. Over a 12 minute stretch in the second half, the Falcons went on a 30-9 run over the Argonauts.
West Florida was able to cut into the lead as time ran down, but were never able to truly get back into the game and fell by 11 points, 69-58.
Troran Brown was the leading scorer in the game, scoring 24 points. He did this despite going 0-6 from behind the arc, but he did hit all six of his free throws.
Ed'Lexus Collier had a double-double on the day, scoring 15 points and recording ten rebounds.
The Falcons recorded 14 offensive rebounds in the game and forced 22 turnovers by the Argonauts.
Montevallo only committed nine turnovers in the game, cutting their average for the year nearly in half.
This was the final game before conference play for the Falcons. Montevallo will travel to Columbus, Ga. next Saturday, December 14th, where they will take on the Cougars.
