AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women's soccer team was picked to finish ninth in the 2013 Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches' poll, released Aug. 15.
The Falcons received a total of 42 points in the coaches' poll, including three seventh-place votes, five eighth-place votes, three ninth-place votes, and one eleventh-place vote.
Columbus State received 111 points and will enter this season as the slim favorite, recording only two more points than second-place Armstrong (109). The Pirates actually had one more first-place vote than the Cougars, but Armstrong also had three fourth-place votes, and the Pirates only received votes in the top three. Just behind these two schools was North Georgia, who received 106 points and three first-place votes. All possible first-place votes went to these three programs.
Montevallo was picked to finish ahead of USC Aiken, Young Harris, and Georgia Southwestern.
The Falcons finished in eighth-place last season, with a record of 7-9-2.
There is a lot of talent returning for Montevallo, including Jade Pennock, who has been selected to the preseason All-Conference team. Pennock was the 2012 Peach Belt Conference co-Freshman of the Year. In addition to Pennock, the Falcons return 10 of 11 starters from last year's squad.
The University of Montevallo women's soccer team will open the season in Morrow, Ga. against Queens (N.C.). Their first home contest will be on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. against West Alabama.
