MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team defeated Flagler College 3-1 in Peach Belt Conference play Sept. 27 to extend its winning streak to seven matches.
The Falcons defeated the Saints 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22.
The current winning streak is the longest since the eight-match winning streak achieved by the 2010 team on its way to the program's second appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The victory over Flagler marked the Falcons' first against the Saints since Sept. 25, 2010.
Senior Manyi Ati led Montevallo (10-2 overall, 3-1 in Peach Belt Conference) with a season-high 17 kills in the win. Ati also recorded 12 digs as she posted her team-leading sixth double-double of the season.
Fellow senior Michelle Carle added nine kills, junior Katie Best contributed eight kills and sophomore Rebekah Phelps finished with seven kills and nine digs.
Senior Kaleigh Harvey recorded a team-high 26 digs in the victory. Sophomore Anna Quinn added 17 digs to go along with five kills. Fellow sophomore Jessica Falletta chipped in nine digs.
Sophomore Briana Marquez finished with 10 digs to go along with a team-high 37 assists as she posted her fourth double-double of the season.
Ati recorded back-to-back kills to help the Falcons close out a 25-20 win in the opening set.
Best recorded a kill late in the second set to give Montevallo a 19-14 advantage. The Falcons held off the Saints down the stretch to clinch a 25-23 win in the frame.
Flagler took the third set 25-18 before the Falcons rallied to clinch the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. Quinn and Phelps recorded a kill each in the late stages of the set to help the Falcons clinch the match.
The team hosted a Falcons 4 Paws drive leading up to the match against Flagler to supply Joe Jackson's Dog World, located in Jemison, Ala., with supplies it needs to operate a "no-kill" animal shelter and sanctuary.
Montevallo returns to action Saturday, Sept. 28 with a home match against undefeated Armstrong Atlantic State University in Peach Belt Conference action.
